Full Job Description

As an Armourer for large calibre weapons, you will have a role that is out of the ordinary, acting as a vital member of the Gun Fitters team. You will be responsible for maintaining weapons' systems and supporting large calibre trials at the Shoeburyness site. You will be involved in all aspects of MoD trails support for large calibre weapons and mounting systems, mechanical equipment and explosive materials used in human performance and protection capability through QinetiQ's bespoke test and evaluation services.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Support in all aspects of maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing large calibre weapons' systems to ensure the safe and serviceable conditions in preparation for trails

  • Ensure that all weaponry and associated equipment are issued for trial and proof activities

  • Provide a variety of preventative, scheduled maintenance and fault rectification for large calibre weapons' equipment

  • Provide stakeholder engagement support to the Team Leader for Ordinance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Engineering

  • Conduct a range of risk assessments across relevant equipment, rigs and explosive articles

  • Develop professional and technical skills within all aspects of pre-planned and reactive maintenance for a range of trials support

  • Provide a variety of support for materials used in human protection through test and evaluation trails


  • This role is a full-time position based at our Shoeburyness site 5 days a week.

  • Proven experience working with large calibre ordnance and associated equipment

  • Demonstrable awareness or knowledge of relevant risk assessment and health & safety regulations associated with large calibre weapons' systems, rigs and associated articles

  • Previous relevant experience working with large calibre gun systems which may include field artillery, Naval guns or experience of similar large calibre weapons' systems or critical components

  • Demonstrable experience of maintenance, fault finding and repair of various large calibre weapons' systems and engineering workshop techniques, or sound understanding of engineering principles, A recognised military large calibre armament apprenticeship, armourer qualification or proven equivalent experience acting as a large calibre engineer or armourer

  • Computer literacy including knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications

  • A full clean UK driving licence
