Full Job Description

Reporting to: Head of Department - Naomi Thompson, The technician will be responsible for assisting students on Art Therapy courses with the practical element of their studies and helping to maintain the studio spaces in which they produce artwork. The post-holder is responsible for facilitating the creative and critical practices of students using the Ceramics Art Practice Area, fostering an environment that is rich, engaging, and conducive to experimentation and the development of students' work. The post-holder will help facilitate the course tutors in maintaining three studios used for experiential art-making sessions, liaising where necessary with Estates where cleaning and repairs are required. The post-holder will assist students with the installation of a final year exhibition, overseeing the safe preparation of the space and hanging of work while ensuring necessary tools and materials are at their disposal.,

  • Offer guidance on a wide range of technical and creative ceramic making
  • processes and activities.
  • Give expert advice on ceramic materials and processes as part of a
  • discussion around what the individual student aims to achieve.
  • Lead students to and liaise with external commercial suppliers when projects
  • require external facilities.
  • Provide expert technical tuition and demonstration of all tools and machinery
  • designated for student use
  • Foster and maintain a dialogue with students throughout their period of study
  • in order to nurture the development of excellent artistic practice
  • Develop and share with colleagues, knowledge, approaches, technical
  • experience, skills and understanding of methods Planning and Managing Resources
  • Assist in the day-to-day management and operations of the A.P.A, such as
  • mixing glazes, receiving materials deliveries and recycling clay
  • Pack and operate kilns with expert care for students' work while preventing
  • damage to kilns and furniture
  • Help effectively manage the A.P.A's budget, maintaining a stock of materials
  • and other consumables
  • Assist students in the purchase of on-site materials, endeavouring to recoup
  • expenditure whilst to maintaining fair pricing for students
  • Help develop and implement systems for improving the effectiveness and
  • efficiency of the A.P.A
  • Advise the department of proposed areas of investment with regard to
  • developments and innovations within the sector as well as trends in student demand.
  • Maintain and develop the APA inventory., Ensure a relevant and stimulating learning environment, encouraging excellent
  • creative experimentation leading to world class learning outcomes
  • Endeavour to maintain a safe working environment by instituting and maintaining
  • safe working practices and training students in accordance with these practices
  • Endeavour to maintain a working environment that adheres to health and safety
  • requirements in the use of visual display equipment for both staff and students.
  • Endeavour to supervise and monitor the activities of students whilst they are
  • working in the A.P.A
  • Ensure that resources and equipment are kept in a well-maintained and safe
  • condition by monitoring safety and maintenance needs including tasking specialist engineers to undertake periodic servicing, repairs, and assessment of compliance to current regulations
  • Ensure that students adopt a responsible, respectful, and professional manner in
  • their use of the facilities and interaction with laboratory staff.
  • Assist the Department's Health & Safety representative in maintaining updated H&S
  • manuals

    A good work-related or level 3+ qualification that demonstrates a working A, C knowledge of the ceramic process Desirable Criteria 1 - Qualifications BTEC level 3 or higher, degree or postgraduate qualification in ceramics- A, C, I related course Essential Criteria 2 - Experience 2 years experience of ceramic studio maintenance and operation through A,I,R private practice or relevant work elsewhere Desirable Criteria 2 - Experience 5 years experience of ceramic studio maintenance and operation through A,I,R private practice or relevant work elsewhere Experience of relevant professional practice in Art Therapies A,I,R Essential Criteria 3 - Knowledge Safe loading and operation of kilns for firing of work A,I,R Understanding of how to mix glazes A,I,R Understanding of safe working practices and hazards presented by A,I,R essential materials and equipment Desirable Criteria 3 - Knowledge Understanding of slip-casting and/or 3D fabrication workflows A,I,R Essential Criteria 4 - Skills Knowledge of basic handbuilding techniques such as pinching, coiling A,I,R and slab-building Ability to mix and recycle clay A,I,R Excellent verbal and written communication skills A,I,R Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills A,I,R Desirable Criteria 4 - Skills Advanced handbuilding skills such as modelling, sculpting and production A,I,R of large format work Experience with and ability to teach wheel-throwing A,I,R
