Full Job Description

As an Assistant Comment Editor, you will commission and edit opinion pieces for digital and print. A creative approach and the confidence to explore new ideas is key. You'll also have the opportunity to liaise with our columnists and represent the desk at editorial meetings. Key responsibilities

  • Commissioning and editing opinion pieces for digital and print.
  • Ability to come up with original, creative angles on stories that will work as comment articles.
  • Representing the comment desk at editorial meetings and pitching ideas to the relevant editors.
  • Building relationships and liaising regularly with columnists.
  • You will work with our audience teams on the promotion of opinion pieces.
  • Some weekend working required.

    Strong editorial judgement and ability to distinguish quickly between good and bad ideas and pitches.
  • Interest in politics, current and international affairs.
  • The ability to edit and improve copy quickly - you should be a stickler for linguistic details.
  • A strong understanding of the Telegraph's audience.
  • Previous experience working with comment writers would be desirable.
  • Confidence in writing headlines, with an understanding of SEO and social media platforms would be useful but is not essential.
