Full Job Description
Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers. As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving. Being multi-disciplinary means we have great opportunities to work in design and development of new structures, structural repair schemes, level crossing improvements/closures, line speed increases and access for all schemes. Additional to design work we provide support to the asset management teams, carrying out structural inspections and assessments of existing bridge and canopy structures, some of which were constructed in the Victorian era, confirming current condition, and producing assessment calculations to safeguard structural capacity and extend their operational life. A typical week can be highly varied and involve office and site based design activity from Desk Studies to detailed software analysis, stakeholder engagement, engagement with suppliers, site-based activity including supervision of investigations, supervision of construction activities and assessments of existing earthworks and structures. The team undertake work on single and also multi-disciplinary projects working alongside our NRDD colleagues in Track, Signalling, Civils & Structures, Buildings & Architecture and M&E teams on complex and challenging regional and national projects to deliver innovative and award-winning projects and delivering efficiencies and improved risk management. The national team comprises Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Geologists, Civil and Drainage Engineers. Professional development leading to Chartered status is encouraged and actively supported within the team complimented by targeted training and coaching to support staff achieve their goals., The role will be based in the South West at either our Bristol of Cardiff offices. Do you have Geotechnical knowledge & experience? Do you have a working knowledge of railway standards, Eurocode 7 and UK annex design codes, ground investigation in addition to construction contracts and specifications? Do you have experience in Ground Investigations; Producing and Checking of Ground Investigation Reports & Geotechnical Design Reports?, We are looking for an enthusiastic team member with skills to critically evaluate geotechnical problems, and clearly communicate technical detail to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. They will be joining the growing team in Bristol / Cardiff, helping to develop a new and exciting work bank. A hard work ethic is required and a willingness to try new geotechnical and drainage challenges as this team develops. In this role you will need technical expertise and experience in assessing risks and solutions related to geotechnical engineering & drainage activities, with particular reference to the railway environment. Any previous experience of undertaking and managing: desk studies, design, procuring & supervising Ground Investigations (GIs); producing and checking of Ground Investigation Reports & Geotechnical Design Reports in accordance with the requirements of Eurocode 7 : Part 1 is advantageous. Experience of soil mechanics, foundation design (shallow and piled), retaining wall design (gravity and embedded), slope stability and engineering geology would also be desirable It would also be great if you have working knowledge of railway standards, Eurocode 7 and UK annex design codes, ground investigation and construction contracts and specifications.,
- A Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
- A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
- Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
- An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
- An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
- CDM, Risk Assessment competency. Desirable
- Working towards membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. ICE, CIWEM etc).
- Experience in design, construction and maintenance.
- A working knowledge of rail engineering
- Basic Project Management Skills.
- Strong Interpersonal and team working skills.
- Broad knowledge of H&S legislation.
- Understanding of Environmental Requirements of Geotechnical & Drainage schemes.
- Basic knowledge of Quality Management.
- Competent in exercising the Designers obligations of CDM.
