There is an opportunity for an experienced senior nurse with managerial leadership to join our nursing leadership team as an Assistant Director of Nursing for Cancer Services on a fixed term contract for a 4mth period. You will be part of our Triumvirate Leadership Team and work closely with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director for Cancer Services. As part of the Triumvirate, the post holder will work collaboratively with the Cancer Clinical Lead and Directorate Manager ensuring that robust systems of governance and performance management are in place, and that high quality patient-led services are continued to being developed and delivered to nationally recognised best practice. The temporary postholder will support transformational projects during this fixed term employment period to deliver personalised care in cancer with the Macmillan Personalised Care Project Manager. The post holder reports to the Divisional Director of Nursing in the Surgical and Anaesthetic Division but will also work collaboratively with a variety of health care professionals from primary and secondary care settings, Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance, patients, their representatives and external agencies to ensure the delivery of cancer services within the Trust are consistent with both national and local strategy, to include relevant governance, quality and operational frameworks, To provide managerial and professional leadership and to be responsible and accountable for the delivery of a high quality, patient centred cancer services across the Trust that meets the needs of the patient. To provide professional nursing advice and leadership for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Cancer Plan that ensures the delivery of a high quality, patient centred service that meets patient need, whilst encouraging and enabling advancement and development of the nursing service and practice. To work as a triumvirate with the Cancer Clinical Director and Cancer Directorate Manager and other Clinical Directors, Directorate Managers and specialist nurses in the co-ordination and delivery of cancer services. To support the operational delivery of cancer services by providing systems of work, pathway redesign, risk assessments, governance arrangements and assurance for nursing. To integrate with external organisations on the delivery of the cancer agenda, examples include Macmillan Support and members of the Pennine Cancer Locality Group, This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced senior nurse currently working at band 8a in an operational role to develop professionally and managerially within the cancer services team. You will work within the cancer services triad alongside the directorate manager and also the clinical director at both an operational and strategic level, To provide leadership for change and service improvement within all areas of cancer.

  • To advance the development and practice of cancer nursing in line with national recommendations and standards where available.
  • To collaborate with Allied Healthcare Professionals and Consultants, ensuring the advancement of cancer care and support through a combined approach.
  • To provide direct line management (including professional leadership) to staff working in the Macmillan Cancer Information Centre, the staff working in the chemotherapy Units, the Acute Oncology Nursing Team, the Clinical Psychologist and any other members of staff as agreed with the Cancer Business Manager.
  • To liaise closely with the other Lead Cancer Nurses within the Strategic Clinical Network to implement the Cancer Reform Strategy, the NHS Cancer Plan and Cancer Survivorship initiatives.
  • To act as a key link to the Strategic Clinical Network, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Clinical Senate and other significant stakeholders in delivering cancer care.
  • To maintain clinical competence and credibility, acting as a role model for best practice, ensuring that nursing care is provided to a high standard, in response to changing services and patient needs.
  • To advise the Divisional Director of Nursing on issues of professional and service developments and identify the nursing implications of these.
  • To act as the Trust lead for the cancer peer review programme, leading the review process and working with tumour sites to implement recommendations.
  • Ensure strong professional leadership, working with the Matrons and Clinical Nurse Specialists to support high standards of care.
  • To ensure patients, carers and their families are empowered and educated in respect of self-care and sustainable lifestyle changes.
  • To work horizontally within the Trust advising and supporting senior nursing colleagues on the delivery of local cancer services.
  • COMMUNICATION
  • Ensure communication and working relationships are effective and underpin staff involvement in all complexities and levels of decision making
  • Generate and share knowledge and expertise with all members of the multi-professional team, utilising any new knowledge feedback to inform and change practice.
  • Provision of verbal and written advice and support to the Chief Nurse, Chief Executive, Executive Director for Cancer, Medical Director and other senior staff as requested on complex cancer issues
  • Ensure communication and working relationships are effective and underpin staff involvement in all complexities and levels of decision making.
  • Foster a common sense or purpose and shared values in pursuit of the East Lancashire Cancer Unit combined with the Strategic Clinical Network organisational objectives.
  • To forge effective links with primary, secondary and tertiary care to ensure effective communication.
  • ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • To participate in the Trust's out of hours on call arrangements established to support delivery of the Trust's services outside normal working hours.
  • Lead initiatives to aid retention and workforce planning for cancer nursing staff.
  • Lead the recruitment and employment of all staff within sphere of responsibility.
  • Participate in the appraisal process and ensure all staff within sphere of responsibility receive an annual appraisal
  • Participate in the annual Macmillan Review for this post and support other team members in their annual Macmillan review.
  • Participate as a full member of the cancer management team, supporting planning, developments and operational delivery, including support to achievement of cancer performance targets
  • To take a lead in the investigation and resolution of complaints and adverse clinical incidents within cancer services, ensuring that appropriate action is taken to learn from events
  • To participate in the management of the acute oncology service including supporting the clinical director and the business manager in the recruitment and retention of consultant medical oncologists

  • To ensure the recognition and value of the nursing contribution and encourage a culture of professional academic publications within the cancer nursing team., The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
