This role consists of an exciting, varied, and demanding portfolio. Under your strategic leadership you will shape and deliver corporate strategy and policy development as well as our performance framework. In addition, you will have line management responsibility for corporate health and safety (shared service), our civic and democratic services function as well as our shared legal service function. Essentially, you will be someone who can demonstrate that you are able to balance strategy and policy development whilst supporting other senior strategic and operational colleagues. Let's make no bones about this role, it will offer considerable challenge and opportunity as well as reward as you will be joining our Corporate Management Team at a time when we will have recently completed a Corporate Peer Challenge and will be in the midst of the development of a new Corporate Plan. These key work strands will help us to fundamentally reshape our organisation and services with reducing budgets. Ideally you will have a background and operational knowledge of driving performance, improving operational resilience as well as experience of setting the strategic direction in a complex political operating environment. With a newly appointed Chief Executive and recently elected new administration, we are looking for you join us on our exciting cultural change journey. Ideally you will have the ability to lead, inspire and motivate teams, instil a change mindset and help set the strategic vision, whilst possessing the personal credibility and determination to get things done. As a strategic leader passionate about delivery excellent council services, with a positive and enabling "can do" attitude, you will be key to promoting an organisational culture that puts the customer at the heart of the provision of high quality, value for money services developed using data/research and consultation with communities. We are recruiting an Assistant Director reporting to the Executive Director/Deputy CE, which is a key leadership role in:

  • Delivering our new Corporate Plan
  • Revising and implementing performance framework that make use of data/evidence
  • Overseeing a range of corporate projects
  • Delivering a corporate Health & Safety shared service
  • Managing our Legal and democratic services team (including the civic office)
  • You will be at the core the Council's transformation in terms of cultural change and the reshaping of our future delivery model., The duties of this role include a requirement to take part in an on-call rota, approximately six times per year. This post is politically restricted within the terms of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act and the provisions of that act are incorporated within the contract of employment for this post. The successful candidate will be restricted from holding a political office such as a serving member of a local authority, an officer of a political party, a Member of Parliament or a Member of the European Parliament. In addition, they will also be precluded from activities such as speaking or writing publicly to affect public support for a political party. This is a home working contract, and the majority of duties will be carried out at home, however, employees will be contractually required to attend site on two days per month for team meetings, 121 meetings, etc. Employees may also be required to attend a site for meetings, collaborative work or to undertake work related activities. Site attendance will constitute no more than 40% of working time and includes the contractual 2 days per month., In the event of exceptionally high levels of response, we reserve the right to close the post before the date stated to prevent the number of applications received being unmanageable.
