We have an exciting opportunity available to join Rough Trade as the Assistant Manager of Rough Trade East. The Assistant Manager has full responsibility for the running of the store in the General Manager's absence. The Assistant Manager reports directly to the General Manager.

In this role, the successful candidate will focus most of their time on back-of-house operations including goods-in and goods-out, maintaining stock file integrity, delegating stock to floor workload, execution of back-of-house health and safety, inventory management training, and becoming a master of our inventory management system.

The Assistant Manager of Rough Trade East plays a central role in supporting the General Manager in continuing to grow and build on Rough Trade's success, whilst delivering a truly inspiring in-store experience to their customers. The stockroom is the engine room of the store's success, you will manage this effectively and efficiently, and alongside the General Manager, will ensure that our customers are always able to find what they're looking for.

The successful candidate will be passionate and knowledgeable about music across a classic back catalogue, as well as contemporary and new acts, and will have a working knowledge of a wide range of specialist genres.

Your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Deputising for the General Manager in their absence.

  • Supporting the recruitment, retention and training of the store team.

  • Supporting the implementation of new strategies and accomplishment of business objectives.

  • Efficient use of the store's inventory management system to ensure effective stock control.

  • Supporting the General Manager with performance management.

  • Ensuring health and safety compliance across all areas of the store, with particular attention to back-of-house.

  • Role modelling best-in-class customer service to the store team, both on the shop floor and through efficient back-of-house operations.

  • Supporting with merchandising and store presentation to maximise sales.

  • Supporting with the management of all store funds including cash reconciliation and banking.

    At least 1 year of management experience in a similar role with a focus on stock management and back-of-house operations.

  • Excellent people management skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of goods in and goods out operations including stock management, stock handling, inventory management, stock taking, loss prevention through efficient data management and maintenance of an accurate stock file.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • A proven track record of retail management and leadership experience, ideally in a music retail management environment.

  • Strong commercial awareness and business acumen.

  • A strong understanding of IT systems. Especially inventory management and EPOS systems.

  • Commercial awareness.

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Ability to perform well under pressure.

  • Strong knowledge of Rough Trade, who our customers are and what we do. It is essential that you are comfortable being a brand ambassador at all times.

    This role is full-time. Salary is dependent on experience and is based on a 37.5 hour work week split across 7 days, Monday to Sunday.


  • Candidates are expected to work a varied shift pattern including evenings, late nights, weekends and public holidays to ensure that the needs of the business are met.
