Full Job Description

Reporting into the Operations Manager, the Assistant Operations Manager will be responsible for leading on the delivery of operational service requirement and operational service improvements to achieve performance and financial targets. Supporting performance with communication, planning and reviews. Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the South Bank Quay (SBQ) Operations Control Centre (OCC) that supports the conduct of safe and efficient operations at SBQ.


  • Provide depth of operations management support to the Operations Manager.


  • Coordinate all arrival and departure notifications for SBQ vessels with the Harbour Master.


  • As required, provide direct operations leadership to support night operations being conducted at the SBQ. Review and install appropriate metrics of measurement which will provide management information necessary for improving standards of delivery essential to obtain and retain client satisfaction.


  • Improve processes and practices in support of organisational goals.


  • Support the Operations Manager to lead and manage individual and team performance and development.


  • Responsible for proactively implementing safe working practice in line with HSSEQ guidelines and legislation.


  • In partnership with the HSSEQ department, ensure the continuous improvement of safety and environmental performance and compliance to all laws, regulations and industry standards/codes.


  • Integrate ILMS operating system.


  • Use Power BI to report KPIs and build monthly reports.


  • Coordinate and monitor the effectiveness of operations to sustainably meet demand within safe operating limits.


  • Regularly stock take and control inventory levels of consumables.


  • Identify opportunities for growth; to introduce new products and services; cost reductions and cost efficiency savings.


  • Report significant breaches of policy and/or regulation to the Operations Manager or appropriate person.


  • Ensure that Supervisors are fully trained to fulfil their operational activities and responsibilities.


  • Support the Operations Manager/ General Manager with the management of Teesworks P&L.


  • Financial planning and budgetary control, inventory control, and disposal cost effectiveness


  • Business case cost planning preparation and assist in development and execution of business plans with a primary focus on profit growth.


  • Ad-hoc responsibilities as requested by the Operations manager for the successful operation of the facility including flexibility to cover nights shifts when required.

    Customer focused and the ability to build and maintain effective relationships, both internal and external.


  • Accustomed to working effectively in a fast-paced environment, flexible and can adapt to changing workloads and priorities, where high standards are not compromised under pressure.


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and in writing.


  • Ability to work stand-alone, demonstrating initiative and ownership, while a positive contributor to the wider team.


  • Computer literate with well-developed IT skills across the Microsoft suite and a practical understanding of data entry and reporting applications.


  • Good understanding of H&S Legislation.
