Full Job Description

We are excited to welcome an enthusiastic and passionate nurse to join the Supportive & Palliative Care Team at Manchester Royal Infirmary on a fixed term contract until February 2026 to cover maternity leave. Before applying please ensure that if you are requesting a secondment this has been agreed with your line manager as we cannot guarantee a permanent post at the end of this period.

As part of the role, the post holder will work as part of a large MDT to assess, plan and implement evidence based and individualised care to inpatients with life limiting illness, complex needs and those who are approaching the end of their lives.

They will be able to provide specialist education and training to colleagues, carers and patients.

The post holder will share both SPCT and MFT's values and aspirations, to work with colleagues in the wider MDT to ensure care is coordinated, individualised, and delivered at a high standard, as outlined in our strategy.

They will support the development of the service, by taking part in audit, quality improvement, and risk assessment/management in line with local and national guidelines.

This post requires you to work 30 hours per week including weekends and bank holidays, and is not negotiable due to the need of the service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to manage a caseload of patients with complex health needs/life limiting illness, providing clinical visits where appropriate, including the need to travel between acute sites as required. They must keep up to date with local and national guidelines related to palliative and end of life care, and should only work within their scope of practice, identifying their own learning needs and escalating as required.

They will provide specialist palliative care advice and support to patients, those important to them, and all health care professionals involved in their care as appropriate. They will support staff across MFT with their own professional development, in response to incidents and self identified needs, to ensure all staff are prepared and equipped to care for patients with palliative and end of life care needs.

The post holder will be able to recognise and address issues around palliative care, including cancer treatments, pain and symptom management, psycho-social needs and barriers, ethical dilemmas, and seek senior support when needed from the doctors and senior nursing team.

The post holder will formulate individualised plans of care for patients in liaison with the senior supportive & palliative care nursing team and doctors.

The post holder will act as a core team member of the palliative care MDT, recognising that their individual actions represent the team as whole and personal beliefs should not impact care.
