Full Job Description

We are seeking a committed and knowledgeable individual to join our team as an Associate Lecturer in Nuclear Engineering. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of our nuclear engineering programmes at the award winning Rolls-Royce Nuclear Skills Academy, particularly as part of higher degree apprenticeships.

As an Associate Lecturer, you will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective learning experiences in Mechanical, Materials, Electrical, and Nuclear Engineering, as well as Engineering Mathematics at the undergraduate level. This includes topics such as material science, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.

You will utilise a range of teaching techniques to inspire and engage students on-campus, while also contributing to the development and enhancement of module and programme design, ensuring alignment with university quality standards. Additionally, you will participate in assessment processes, including setting exams, marking, and providing constructive feedback to students.

Actual hours and days will be described in a 'Schedule of Work'.

This role is employed by University of Derby but works in partnership with Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd. Due to the nature of work that Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd conducts and the protection of certain assets, some roles within the Nuclear Skills Academy (NSA) require post-holders to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance.

This role does not currently require SC clearance, and this will not be a condition of appointment to this role. However, please be aware that there may be a future requirement for the successful candidate/s to undertake a SC check should any change in circumstances render this necessary due to development of the NSA over the coming years.

You will be based at the NSA and our Markeaton Street sites, and will be part of a team of staff of academics, tripartite reviewers and managers who deliver the Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Degree Apprenticeship for Rolls- Royce.

We are seeking a dedicated individual with a strong academic background in Mechanical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering. To be successful in this role, you should hold a Good Honours Degree in Mechanical/Materials/Electrical/Nuclear Engineering or relevant discipline and a Masters Degree in a relevant discipline.

The ideal candidate will have experience or expertise in Mechanical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering, gained either from academia or industry, and proficiency in using digital tools to support teaching and research activities. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, along with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly.

You should be able to work independently and collaboratively within a team and be committed to continuous professional development and maintaining high standards of teaching.

Join our dynamic team and make a significant impact on the next generation of nuclear engineers!

The Nuclear Skills Academy (NSA) has been developed by Rolls-Royce Submarines in partnership with the University of Derby to sustain nuclear capability within the UK's submarines programme, by creating a pipeline of new talent into the sector. It is now in its third year of delivery and has a dedicated facility in Derby which has teaching facilities and extensive workshops for the education of apprenticeships at levels 3 to 6 in engineering and business.

The School of Engineering, which is part of the College of Science and Engineering has a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and apprenticeships, in manufacturing, materials science, civil engineering, aerospace and nuclear engineering. We have approximately 600 apprentices studying with companies based in the Midlands and North of the UK.
