Full Job Description
As Associate Surveyor, you will work alongside a team of industry leading professionals and play a key role in resolving complex construction disputes, providing expert advice, and managing negotiations, adjudications, arbitrations and other dispute resolution (ADR) processes. This role requires a strong understanding of both construction processes and legal frameworks., Dispute Management & Resolution
- Provide expert advice on construction-related disputes, including contract disagreements, delays, claims and defects.
- Lead and manage the dispute resolution process, including adjudications, arbitrations and mediations.
- Prepare detailed reports, expert witness statements and evidence-based submissions for disputes.
- Conduct detailed assessments of construction contracts and identify areas of potential dispute risk. Contract & Claims Consultancy
- Review and advise on construction contracts, particularly in relation to dispute clauses and risk mitigation.
- Advise on claims management, including delay and disruption claims, extensions of time (EOT) and loss and expense claims.
- Support clients in negotiations and settlement discussions to resolve disputes before they escalate. Client Relationships & Stakeholder Management
- Build strong relationships with clients, legal teams, contractors and other stakeholders involved in the dispute process.
- Act as the point of contact for clients during ongoing disputes, providing timely updates and strategic advice.
- Represent clients at hearings, mediations or during expert determination proceedings. Expert Witness & Technical Support
- Act as an expert witness in court proceedings or formal dispute hearings as required.
- Provide technical support and guidance to clients and junior staff on construction disputes and contract administration.
- Conduct forensic analysis of construction projects, including project documentation, timelines and financials, to establish causes of disputes. Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor junior surveyors and dispute resolution staff, providing training and development opportunities.
- Lead dispute resolution teams on complex projects, ensuring effective collaboration and management of resources.
Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or related to Construction (or equivalent) - Postgraduate qualification in Dispute Resolution, Construction Law or Arbitration (desirable but not essential)
- Membership in professional bodies such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in quantity surveying or project management, with at least 5 years specialising in construction dispute resolution and/or adjudications
- Proven track record in successfully resolving construction disputes with clients, developers and contractors
- Experience in handling disputes related to large-scale construction projects (e.g., commercial, infrastructure or residential).
- Excellent communication, negotiation and rapport building skills
- Excellent written skills for drafting reports, negotiating settlements and presenting evidence
