Full Job Description

Responsible for the operational management of a team of underwriters to control the risks under the ATE work stream. The Senior Underwriter leads by example by processing higher levels risks whilst also continually developing the knowledge and skills of their team. The Senior Underwriter is the primary contact for all technical and escalated queries from within the team and from other departments.Your tasks

  • Line Management: manage and coach a team of underwriting staff taking responsibility for their work prioritisation, motivation, performance and productivity.
  • Work Flow Management: Plan, prioritise and supervise ATE work to meet company service, quality and profit standards.
  • Underwriting Processing: Monitor, control and implement the improvement of the business processes associated with the ATE underwriting function; ultimately ensuring processes are completed in an accurate and timely manner whilst also fulfilling the risk appetite guidance as set by senior management.
  • Internal Customer Service: Deal with technical and escalated underwriting queries primarily from within the ATE technical underwriting team but sometimes from other stakeholders, ensuring both satisfactory resolution and the development of team members' ability to handle similar issues in the future.
  • External Customer Service: In conjunction with the input of senior underwriting managers, the ATE sales function and other internal stakeholders, implement and maintain function improvements that ensure we deliver market leading customer service. Visiting customers to discuss their underwriting experiences and needs may be required.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance: Ensure ATE technical underwriting team activities are carried out in line with stipulated processes, procedures and authority limits, providing coaching and training where necessary to the team.
  • Communication: Work effectively with all stakeholders to the policy (including brokers, CMCs and solicitors). Negotiate terms, exclusions, cover scope and premium rates as required. Attendance at industry events may be required.
  • Learning & Development: Identify the L&D needs of the ATE technical underwriting team and work to fulfil those needs in an appropriate and effective manner.
  • Reporting: Oversee and deliver ATE Underwriting team reporting requirements, delivering management information, inclusive of narrative, in relation to underwriting inputs and outcomes.

    Graduate or equivalent and/or good level of education (min 5 GCSE Grade C+) with a minimum of 3 years After the Event insurance or comparable experience in a legal or underwriting setting. Good working knowledge of MS Office applications and experience of using M365 cloud based services would be beneficial. Good numeracy and literacy skills with an attention for detail and accuracy. Experience of customer-facing contact / service. CII qualified or working towards. Line management experience.
