Full Job Description
General office duties will include reception, computer input of patients' data, dealing with telephone enquiries and filing.
For further information and/or to arrange an informal visit, please contact Dawn Adkins-Smith on , The post holder will be responsible for producing accurate and timely word-processed reports on Histopathology and Non Gynae Cytology specimens, as required.
The post holder will be part of a team delivering support services to Cellular Pathology, providing input of patient records, reception, generation and distribution of reports.
The post holder will carry out the role of audio typist and communicate effectively with office, laboratory and clinical staff.
The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any of the sections of Cellular Pathology to meet all required national standards e.g., ISO15189, Northampton General Hospital is one of the largest employers in the area and we are on an exciting journey. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Be familiar with all methods of communication used in their area of work.
Manage barriers to effective communication.
Improve communication using communication skills.
Maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective teamwork.
Deal politely and efficiently with enquiries from users and clients of the Pathology service this includes:
Receiving visitors into the department.
Dealing with external and internal telephone queries from the other health professionals.
Communicate in line with the legislation and policies governing the communication of information.
Promote a positive image of themselves and the service.
Assess and identify
o Feedback from others on own work.
o How he/she is applying knowledge and skills in relation to the KSF outline for the post.
o Own development needs and interests in the current post.
o What has been helpful in his/her learning and development to date?
Take an active part in the development review of own work against the KSF outline for the post with their reviewer and suggests areas for learning and development in the coming year.
Take responsibility for own personal development and takes an active part in learning opportunities.

To assist in the training of staff members in duties in which the post holder is competent.

Comply with good work practices in accordance with the standards of ISO 15189 and HTA.

Participate in audit when required.
Maintain and promote the professional image of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust.

To assist in the correct handling and dispatch of Cellular Pathology material for both internal and external distribution.
Comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure, and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information.
Use the Laboratory and appropriate Trust Information System according to the authorised protocols.
Produce accurate Cellular Pathology reports by audio transcription using the digital dictation media and computer system.
Collate Cellular Pathology reports and specimen slides for consultant and medical staff for the weekly MDT meetings, as may be required.
Prepare reports generated by computer for any audit requirements.
Input patient data onto the laboratory information system using knowledge of data coding and procedures.
Process patient reports and distribute internally and externally.
Maintain an adequate filing system.
Carry out appropriate daily maintenance of office equipment prior to being used for report generation.
One full-time audio typist is required in our busy Cellular Pathology Office. The ideal candidate should be well organised, have a flexible approach and the ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own initiate. Applicants will be expected to have a proven audio typist and Microsoft applications experience. Knowledge of medical terminology is required as this post will involve audio typing of medical reports.
