Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialist Respiratory/NIV Dietitian to work within the Respiratory MDT at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham or a Dietitian looking to enhance their current skills and knowledge with the aim to specialise in respiratory dietetics by following an in depth competency / training package. The post holder will be mainly based on the two respiratory wards at QEHB, each of which contains a Respiratory Support Unit (RSU) for patients requiring enhanced respiratory support including NIV, CPAP and HFNO.

As a result of new funding, the role mainly focuses on supporting acutely unwell patients in RSU, who may require oral supplements or enteral feeding to meet their nutritional needs. The successful candidate will also provide specialist advice to respiratory patients outside of RSU, such as patients with severe COPD, bronchiectasis and TB, as well as patients stepping down from intensive care requiring intensive rehabilitation.

Dependant on the successful candidates experience, they will be appointed as a band 7 or a band 6 with a competency / training package with the aim of becoming a band 7 once complete. Once competent, the successful candidate will lead the Dietetic Respiratory inpatient service provision on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site. The post holder will line manage a respiratory band 6 dietitian who supports with seeing respiratory patients outside of RSU.

The successful candidate will be part of the larger dietetic team at the QE Hospital of over 50 dietitians covering various specialities. You will work closely with therapy colleagues to develop the respiratory service and will be integrated within the ward MDT, attending board rounds every week. This is a fast paced environment so good leadership and organisational skills are essential to this role.

The successful individual will take a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of a variety of complex patients so the applicant must have significant dietetic experience within a range of specialities including enteral feeding, oral nutritional support, rehabilitation as well as ability to obtain relevant anthropometric measurements.

The post holder will actively participate in development, education and delivery of training to dietetic staff, healthcare professionals and dietetic students. You will initiate and carry out service development projects on the respiratory wards therefore experience of previous project work is desirable. CPD is heavily encouraged within the department, with opportunities to attend relevant study days and participate in internal band 7 development sessions.
