Full Job Description

OPU/OPRA is a busy unit with a professional but friendly team delivering high standards of care. Our focus is providing an appropriate, comprehensive geriatric assessment for patients in our care, with a focus on frailty pathways. We care for patients from the emergency department. You will work alongside the nursing team and wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the admission, discharge and transfer of patients runs smoothly., Assisting with personal care needs of patients and activities of daily living.

Promoting and assisting patients with oral nutrition and fluids and reporting any concerns.

Assist with admission and discharge of patients, including checking valuables.

Assisting with infection control and prevention strategies.

Supporting of patients and their families in the last stages of their life.

Maintaining effective communication.

We are seeking to appoint Band 2 healthcare assistants who are flexible, compassionate and motivated and who can demonstrate an ability to develop within the role. This is a very busy area, with a high patient turnover.

The unit comprises of ten assessment areas and 48 inpatient beds, the patients admitted are frail, elderly and often have multiple comorbidities.

We are looking for compassionate, caring individuals who share the ethos of the unit, and will help drive the service forward, supported by the unit managers and both the qualified ward staff and the current healthcare assistants. The unit is comprised of bay areas and in order to maximise patient safety the unit operates the system of bay nursing. This would be an ideal opportunity for a new in post healthcare assistant or one seeking to gain new knowledge and skills within frailty.

The post holder will provide experience of working with older people, have knowledge of frailty and will be willing to undertake any relevant training to progress the unit.

The successful applicant must also be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be aware of, and actively demonstrate the Trusts vision and values, and have a genuine interest in this new and exciting unit.

  • Familiar with hospital PAS, NVQ Level II in Care, Clear and accurate written/verbal Communication and effective listening skills.

  • Proven interpersonal skills, Demonstrate ability to work on a rota, including nights and weekends and to provide reasonable flexibility in terms of hours worked

  • Willing to adapt to the changing needs of the service, Demonstrate friendly and caring manner

  • Proven ability to work in a team, be supportive of team members, Proven ability to take on board new ideas, skills and knowledge

  • Proven ability to use own initiative and work without close supervision, Proven ability to keep information confidential

  • Please note that the salary advertised is for full time hours. If this post is less than 37.5 hours per week, the salary will be pro-rata. For posts on Agenda for Change pay-scales, new entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the first pay point of the relevant band.

  • Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS)

    The healthcare sector is exempted from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

    In line with other NHS organisations in the North West Region, the Trust is now passing the charge for undertaking a DBS check on to candidates in the event they are successfully appointed into the post for which they have applied. Candidates can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months as a deduction from the monthly salary. However, if you are applying for a post as a BANK worker, the payment must be made in full at the time of employment checks.
