Full Job Description

Surgical Assessment unit also known as The Wilson unit is part of the trust Same Day Emergency Care pathway (SDEC). Same day emergency care (SDEC) is aservice that provides emergency care to patients without the need for an admission to hospital. SDEC is one of the many ways the NHS is working to provide the right care in the right place for patients, to improve flow in the emergency department. The Surgical Assessment unit has a capacity of 6 chairs, 6 trollies and a waiting area with 3 chairs. We accept referrals from Urgent Care Centre (UCC), GP and Accident and Emergency department. We also get referrals from clinics, consultants. The four main specialities that are triaged and reviewed in SAU are General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology and Gynaecology. Some patients who require minor surgical procedures i.e. incision and drainage of abscess are looked after in SAU post-operatively and then discharged home following a period of close monitoring. We also review patients with complicated wound care and dressings requirements. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy Hot clinic is also run in SAU where patients presenting with Gall stones are reviewed and booked for surgery.,

  • Carry out routine observations; blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration rate on patients attending the SAU, documenting all patient observation and NEWS2 score in accordance with department protocols
  • Carry out manual& machine analysis of urine samples, gaining consent of urinary HCG reading as required.
  • Perform venepuncture and cannulation on patients, as per aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) protocol as requested Nurse or Medical staff.
  • Carry out treatment such as primary wound care dressings in accordance with ANTT protocol.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in the assessment of the nursing needs of patients attending the SAU.
  • Assist patients attending the department with personal care and hygiene needs, including moving & handling assistance by trust policies.
  • To perform or assist in the catheterisation of both male and female patients
  • To perform bladder scans as requested by nursing or medical staff
  • To complete nursing documentation
  • To assist nursing staff with the cleanliness, checking of equipment and restocking of items in all areas of the department.
  • Demonstrates general and clinical duties to new staff members in the departments.
  • Ensure any faults or issues are raised with the nurse in charge immediately for appropriate action as necessary.
  • To follow the trust policy for the safekeeping of patients' property whilst in SAU.
