Full Job Description

To work flexibly within a dental team providing high quality care to a wide spectrum of patients within the Orthodontic department based at the Birmingham Dental Hospital (BDH).
Dental Nurses will be provided with a base Clinic/Department when appointed but will be expected to work flexibly across different sites where Dental treatment is provided.
To provide chair side assistance to Clinicians within the Dental service plus arranging/supporting the Clinician with any necessary Domiciliary visits.
To assist with multi disciplinary clinics that supports complex patient needs.
To carry out clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the Clinic/Department., + The Dental Service compromises of a wide range of locations, specialties and services, the post holder will be required to provide comprehensive chair side and administrative support to a clinician within the Orthodontic department based in BDH.
+ To prepare and monitor patients for and during their Dental treatment providing pre and postoperative instructions as required.
+ To undertake the general care of the surgery including Dental equipment/instruments and arrange any necessary repairs as required.
+ To ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.
+ To provide chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.
+ To provide oral health education to patients as required by the Dentist.
+ To assist the Senior Dental Nurse in the smooth running of the Dental service.
+ To support and assist Undergraduate Dental Students.
+ To support and supervise Apprentice Dental Nurse and Foundation Degree students.
Main Duties:
+ To assist the clinician in delivery of clinical duties to include:
+ Ensuring correct instruments/equipment/medicaments are available for the session and that the clinical area is set up appropriately prior to treatment adhering to infection control guidelines.
+ Ensuring patient records are available prior to treatment and updated.
+ Processing Dental radiographs using the relevant local processing systems in accordance with local protocols and IRMER Regulations.
+ Undertaking the decontamination process of Dental instruments as required and/or the preparation of instruments complying with Trust guidelines and the Control of Cross Infection Policy.
+ Carry out necessary clinic daily checks.
+ Dispose of clinical/non-clinical waste as required including safe disposal of sharps in line with the trust policy.
+ Be aware of Trusts Health and Safety Policies including COSHH Regulations especially the use of all chemicals and procedures for any spillage that may occur.
+ Stock control/rotation and the ordering of Dental consumables as required from appropriate suppliers.
+ Assemble and utilise specialist equipment as required.
+ Support the induction of new staff as required.
+ Take part in clinical governance activities and comply with standards set by the Dental service.
+ To undertake health and safety risk assessments as required.
Administrative Duties to include:
+ Deal with day-to-day enquiries and telephone calls from patients and the public.
+ Ensuring all patient records are filed correctly as required and in accordance with local protocols.
+ Ensuring appointments and recalls are undertaken as required.
+ Handling small amounts of cash and taking patient charges.
+ Action patient referrals where necessary following local protocols.
+ Updating electronic patient records.
+ Maintaining appropriate IT skills.
Training and Personal Development:
+ The post holder will be expected to participate in Continuing Personal Development (CDP) through the Personal Development Review (PDR) process.
+ To maintain General Dental Council (GDC) registration.
+ To achieve the required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours as specified by the GDC.
+ All staff will be expected to complete Trust mandatory training and any other identified 'essential to role' training.
