An exciting opportunity has arisen for conscientious, enthusiastic and highly motivated candidates to join the Gastroenterology Department as a Pathway Navigator at Watford General/Hemel Hempstead General Hospital for a 6-month secondment (contract ends 20/03/2025). You will be providing an efficient and comprehensive pathway navigator service to one or more of the Gastroenterology Consultants/Nurses/Registrars. The post holder will work closely with the Gastroenterology consultants, their immediate colleagues, and other administrative and clinical members of the Gastroenterology service. This job may involve cross-site working. This post is 37.5 hours per week (5 days per week), The successful applicants will be providing an efficient and comprehensive pathway navigator service to one or more of the Gastroenterology consultants and Registrars. The post holder will work closely with the Gastroenterology consultants, their immediate colleagues, and other administrative and clinical members of the Gastroenterology service. If you do not hear back within 3 weeks of your application, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion., The successful applicants will provide an efficient and comprehensive administrative service including being responsible for:

  • To provide administrative support to one or more of the Gastroenterology consultants, liaising daily and prioritising workload.
  • Correctly formatting and posting clinic letters produced by the consultants. These letters can often contain important clinical information and so should be actioned in a timely manner.
  • Posting blood request forms, prescriptions and stool pots for testing.
  • Booking outpatient appointments and keeping them apprised of time, date and location when required.
  • Booking virtual appointments for consultants to review patient test results, providing all the relevant information the consultant needs.
  • Checking consultant clinics in advance to make sure there are no appointment slot clashes, and rearranging appointments for any appointment conflicts that are found.
  • Confirming attendance for consultant and SpR outpatient clinics to reduce DNA rates.
  • Co-operating with Consultants and making sure that all patients appointments have outcomes following Outpatient attendance or Notes Review clinic.
  • Actively validating all patients on RTT pathway and making sure all action/orders requested by clinician are completed.
  • Validating PTL list and updating I-reporter tracking comments.
  • Liaising with the Gastroenterology Vetting Co-ordinator on patient vetting, making sure all patients referred by GP and other departments are triaged and followed up with an appointment/test, or communicated to the referring clinician if an appointment is not necessary.
  • Helping cover in the Gastroenterology Vetting Co-ordinator's absence - this involves compiling the next days referrals from eRS/Gastro inbox within a spreadsheet, emailing the appropriate consultant, and actioning the outcomes as required.
  • Liaising with the Endoscopy team with relevant communications on patient tests and procedures.
  • Cancelling clinics when assigned consultant is on leave and using the relevant process to see that displaced patients are given a new clinic appointment.
  • Taking and making calls to patients on a daily basis. These can sometimes be distressing and emotional circumstances, so a sympathetic phone manner is required.
  • Liaising with other members of the West Herts team, as well as colleagues from other hospitals and GP practices.
  • Manage the Gastroenterology inbox as per rota, distributing emails to the relevant pathway navigators/consultant.
  • Filing, photocopying, sorting post and other general office secretarial activities.
  • Respond to email queries in a timely manner.
  • Respond to voicemail messages in a timely manner.
  • Assisting with other pathway navigators' workload when required as part of a buddying system.
