Full Job Description

The Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit on the Royal Brompton site is a 10-bedded unit caring for patients of all ages post cardiac and thoracic surgery as well as invasive cardiology and offers a Monday to Friday service.

Candidates will ideally have prior experience in recovery or critical care nursing. Experience in cardiac nursing is desirable although not essential. We require all applicants to have experience in an acute surgical setting. Induction and training will be tailored to suit the individual candidates needs and provide support for those with minimal experience of caring for sedated and mechanically ventilated patients.

The unit offers a variety of development opportunities to successful candidates, including ILS, ALS, EAPLS, critical care diploma/degree modules as well as a range of in-house study days.

The Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) is a dynamic, and nurse-led role integral to patient recovery.Staff provide specialist cardiothoracic care to both adult and paediatric patients. We are responsible for identifying and addressing surgical or anaesthetic complications, ensuring timely and effective intervention. Our responsibilities include maintaining ventilation and circulation, preventing shock and pain management, with a primary focus on ensuring patient stability during the critical post-operative phase.

PACU nurses play a pivotal role in providing emotional support and reassurance, creating a calming environment as patients recover and prepare for transfer to general care

The Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit on the Brompton site requires band 5 nurses to join our Recovery and Critical Care area. We are a 10-bedded unit recovering cardiac, thoracic and invasive cardiology patients of all ages and offer a Monday to Friday service.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the ward manager and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care and staff development.

Responsible for continuing professional development and overall performance.

Be flexible in the approach to the clinical area.

Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard and participate in conducting nursing audits to achieve the agreed goals and benchmark standards of care.

In conjunction with the staff team contribute to developing and maintaining a ward /department ethos and provide a standard approach to the delivery of excellent nursing care.

Demonstrate through a holistic approach to nursing care and day to day clinical issues an understanding of evidence-based practice.

To demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.

To be aware of the Trust's framework of clinical governance within the ward or department area, seeking advice or guidance where necessary.

Identify and report clinical risks to the wardmanager /matron so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.

To provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual well being of staff, patients/clients and their relatives/carers, seeking guidance or advice where necessary.

Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.

Collaborating with other members of the ward team to ensure the patients needs are met to a consistently high standard.

To actively promote a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff in line with national strategy requirements.

Demonstrate research awareness when carrying out patient care.

To demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good patient relations.

Contribute towards sharing good practice within the ward/department and Trust wide.

To promote a positive image of the Trust.

To work cohesively with all members of the ward team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided

Actively manage own annual leave in line with Trust and local Policy and Procedure.

Participate in the Trust's appraisal and person development plan schemes by meeting with the manager at least annually.

Participate in the programme for clinical supervision as required.

Maintain a personal, professional profile, identifying role and skill developments in line with the Scope of Professional Practice.

Use data which will contribute to the improvement of patient care.

Use the Trust intranet to enhance care and for professional development.

Undertake relevant training for electronic information systems in place and under development.

Following Trust/local guidelines to access results from the EPIC.

To work together with the ward team to ensure effective use of resources

To contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.

To participate in staff education and development, including utilising appropriate learning opportunities and to act as a mentor and resource for student nurse and colleagues.

Under the supervision of the ward / department manager to work on delegated projects relating to local policy development.

To be actively involved in the implementation of Trust policies and procedures at ward / department level, reinforcing their use.

To provide a safe and attractive working environment for team members within available resources.
