Full Job Description

The Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit on the Royal Brompton site is a 10-bedded unit caring for patients of all ages post cardiac and thoracic surgery as well as invasive cardiology and offers a Monday to Friday service.

Candidates will ideally have prior experience in recovery or critical care nursing. Experience in cardiac nursing is desirable although not essential. We require all applicants to have experience in an acute surgical setting. Induction and training will be tailored to suit the individual candidates needs and provide support for those with minimal experience of caring for sedated and mechanically ventilated patients.

The unit offers a variety of development opportunities to successful candidates, including ILS, ALS, EAPLS, critical care diploma/degree modules as well as a range of in-house study days., The Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) is a dynamic, and nurse-led role integral to patient recovery.Staff provide specialist cardiothoracic care to both adult and paediatric patients. We are responsible for identifying and addressing surgical or anaesthetic complications, ensuring timely and effective intervention. Our responsibilities include maintaining ventilation and circulation, preventing shock and pain management, with a primary focus on ensuring patient stability during the critical post-operative phase.

PACU nurses play a pivotal role in providing emotional support and reassurance, creating a calming environment as patients recover and prepare for transfer to general care
