Applications are invited from experienced Ophthalmic Technicians for the full-time permanent position of Ophthalmic Technical Services Manager based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. You will lead an enthusiastic and dedicated team of Ophthalmic Technicians working alongside medical, optometric, orthoptic and nursing staff to provide a diagnostic service for patients in a range of joint and virtual clinics at designated UHB Hospitals and remote diagnostic hubs.

In addition to the managerial responsibilities of the role you will have a caseload of new and follow-up patients and will be required to undertake a wide range of investigations and report the results to ophthalmologists and professional staff., The successful candidate will work alongside their HGS counterpart and take responsibility for the line management of the technician team at the Queen Elizabeth.

As the Lead technician you will be responsible for the planning and coordination of the diagnostic service ensuring that the technical team undertakes the diagnostic tests required by clinicians in a timely and accurate manner. You will be required to maintain and develop departmental policies, protocols and guidelines and ensure that they are adhered to.

You will be responsible for recruitment of new staff and facilitating the personal development of all technician staff at the QE. This includes undertaking appraisals and providing training and performance management within the technician team.

You will undertake a range of diagnostic investigations to include HVF, GVF, OCT, retinal imaging, immersion biometry and UBM and will be responsible for delivering theoretical and practical training to staff to ensure they meet departmental competency standards.

The position necessitates an individual with strong leadership skills and a caring nature who thrives working in a busy department with an interesting and varied caseload.

To be successful in this role you will need excellent communication skills, be approachable, reliable and be able to develop strong professional relationships with team members, senior managerial, clinical and administrative colleagues.
