Full Job Description

We are looking for a bilingual co-worker (Sylheti-speaking) to support the work of the Community Children's Therapy Service at Beatrice Tate Special School and Mile End Hospital in Tower Hamlets. The post-holder will be working with young people from 11 to 19 years who have eating, drinking and swallowing and communication difficulties, including children who have complex medical needs and severe learning disability. The post-holder's duties will include providing bilingual support to the the Speech and Language Therapy team during referral triage, assessment and intervention, running groups and workshops, carrying out intervention plans with the support of the therapist, dealing with queries, and other administrative tasks within the special school setting. The post-holder will be working with a large, well-established and friendly team in a busy work setting. You will need to be able to manage patient data and information, prioritise and manage your own workload and communicate effectively with the therapists, multi-disciplinary teams, children and families. The post-holder needs to be available to work the required hours on a Tuesday, Wednesday and / or Thursday. Main duties of the job The Community Children's Therapies team provides physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy for children and young people up to the age of 19 in Tower Hamlets. Most of the children and young people we work with have developmental difficulties which often are linked to a medical diagnosis e. g. cerebral palsy or autism. Our services are delivered in clinics, schools, nursery settings, children and family centres and homes. As well as working at a specialist' level where we accept referrals for individual children and young people to our service, we also work with partner organisations like schools and children and family centres to enable other professionals to support families at a targeted' level. Building the capacity of other professionals and parents to support children and young people with developmental difficulties is a key priority for our team.

  • Level 2 qualifications in both maths and English (equivalent to GCSE grade 4 or above in England).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) within current or previous roles.
  • Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 qualification in a subject related to health or education.
  • A qualification in counselling.
  • Care Certificate
  • Experience Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with children with special educational needs or Disability (SEND).
  • Experience of administration tasks within a health care, educational or office setting.
  • Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as a therapy assistant (or equivalent AHP support worker role).
  • Experience of providing personalised care to individuals, adapting the care to an individual's needs.
  • Experience of following child protection guidelines.
  • Experience of supporting families under stress.
  • Experience of interpreting if the candidates speaks a language other than English.
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of working in the NHS in community settings.
  • Experience of making clinical notes in a health or social care environment., Knowledge of most common developmental difficulties e.g. autism and how these can impact on children and their families., Knowledge of common interventions that a speech and language therapist, occupation therapist or physiotherapist might use when working with children and young people., High standard of spoken and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to communicate complex information in English.
  • Ability to speak Sylheti as the most spoken language in Tower Hamlets after English and be able to communicate complex information in that language.
  • Ability to work independently, asking for support when needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Able to negotiate, influence and motivate others.
  • Digital literacy skills equivalent to the Level 2 competencies in some domains in the NHS Health and Care Digital Capabilities Framework

  • Good understanding of the principles of confidentiality within the NHS.
  • Evidence of using counselling skills in a professional capacity.
