Full Job Description

The LCL Virology department is looking for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our team working in the serology and molecular sections of the department. The successful applicant will be trained to participate in the weekly bench duties expected of a BMS, as well as wider involvement in quality, health and safety and UKAS preparation as we transition to the new ISO15189 standards. Once trained, the successful post holder will be expected to participate in our extended working day and weekend rota., This is an opportunity for you to develop practical experience in a variety of diagnostic techniques and equipment, from manual confirmation tests to high throughput serology and molecular automation. You will be responsible for a range of procedures, checking quality control, validating, and authorising results, as well as alerting our clinical team to significant results and following up further tests as appropriate. The successful candidate will be expected to work well within the team and be able to adapt and flex to the service needs. There will be opportunities for personal and professional development within this role and the opportunity to help shape the future of the department., 1. Professional a. To attend relevant training tutorials and talks as directed by the senior staff and training lead. b. To take responsibility for the continuous update and maintenance of personal training records or portfolio under the guidance of the senior staff and training lead. c. To learn and to become competent in the performance and interpretation of analytical procedures and laboratory results under the direction of an appropriately qualified member of staff. d. To participate in Continual Professional Development meeting HCPC professional requirements. 2. Technical and Scientific a. To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations, under appropriate supervision until trained and competent to work independently, ensuring Standard Operating Procedures are always adhered to. b. To undertake preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments under the supervision of a Biomedical Scientist until trained and competent to work independently. c. To develop the skills required to prepare specialist reagents required for serological and molecular investigations. d. To undertake technical validation of results from laboratory investigations under the direct supervision of a Biomedical Scientist until trained and competent to work independently. e. To learn how to interpret diagnostic laboratory results and to take appropriate actions where necessary, under the direction of senior staff. To include procedures for: · authorisation of results · ordering relevant follow-up laboratory procedures · adding technically and clinically relevant comments · referring results for a second opinion · informing the requestor of clinically significant results f. To report to the section supervisor any instance or event which may compromise service delivery. g. To undertake method evaluations under the supervision of senior staff. h. To participate in research and development as directed by senior staff. i. To effectively liaise and communicate with all members of staff and to actively participate in laboratory meetings. j. To deal helpfully, competently, and confidentially with patients, staff and laboratory visitors; to deal with all enquiries and to orally transmit results as laid down in SOP. 3. Laboratory Informatics a. To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure, and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information. b. To use the Laboratory Information System according to the authorised protocols. c. To maintain the integrity and accuracy of the laboratory databases. 4. Administrative a. To assist the Biomedical Scientists with record keeping, to ensure compliance with good work practices required for the standards of UKAS ISO15189:2022 b. To ensure that work is carried out in a timely fashion to maintain agreed turnaround times. c. To use departmental resources efficiently and advise their supervisor when stocks of reagents and consumables are approaching minimum stock levels. 5. General a. To comply with the policies and procedures of LUHFT. b. To observe and adhere to local and national health and safety policies. c. To keep the workplace and workbenches clean and tidy. d. To maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective teamwork. e. To treat everyone in LUHFT with courtesy and respect. f. To observe national and local guidance on patient and commercial confidentiality. g. Keep appropriate records of all communications. h. To ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice e.g. UKAS ISO15189:2022 i. To maintain and promote the professional image of Virology and laboratory medicine.

This post is a fixed term contract for 12 months and would be an ideal development opportunity for a motivated individual who will enjoy the challenge of working in a busy laboratory. Our Virology laboratory benefits from fully automated serology and molecular work solutions that run alongside our specialist molecular work areas, allowing us to put our patients and service users at the heart of an innovative and forward-thinking diagnostic service., Knowledge and experience of working in a Virology laboratory would be desirable and full training will be made available to the successful candidate.   • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science approved by the Health Professions Council
  • Health Professions Council Registration (HCPC)
  • Completion of an HCPC training portfolio or IBMS training log book, Practical experience / training sufficient to meet registration requirements
  • Use of IT systems, Knowledge of career pathway and professional development within biomedical science
  • Scientific knowledge developed while studying for an appropriate science degree
