Full Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist (BMS) to undertake the role of Biomedical Scientist Advanced Specialist. The successful candidate will need specialised transfusion knowledge to perform, analyse, interpret, document and report specialist/complex investigations in the RCI laboratory. The post holder will supervise staff in the department and take a leading role in the development and maintenance of scientific and technical expertise in the laboratory.

Please note, the Laboratory will be open between the hours of 08:00 to 22:00, Monday Friday and 08:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays. You will take part in a shift rota to work during these hours and will also participate in an on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

You will be an expert in transfusion/transplantation science. You will undertake a range of scientific procedures using specialist scientific knowledge, performing automated and/or manual investigations.

You will analyse, interpret, validate, transmit and report the results of routine and complex investigations, working at the level of responsibility and conduct required of a registered Biomedical Scientist and be able to communicate highly complex information, including technical and scientific analysis, verbally, in writing and electronically to work colleagues and clinical or medical staff.

You will be expected to provide specialist advice to the centre, clusters of centres and hospitals in the region in own area of expertise and provide specialist training to new members of the team, acting as mentor to less experienced staff.

You will be responsible for the daily allocation of workload and supervision of staff in the department, working to ensure is performed to high standards and meeting regulatory and quality requirements to ensure patient safety is the main focus of all work performed.

You will be required to participate in the shift rota and on call rotas and to provide cover during operational emergencies.
