Full Job Description

We are looking for an exceptional Group Leader, someone with deep knowledge and expertise in biophysics with a passion and talent for their implement to drive drug discovery projects forward. We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in both small molecule and antibody drug discovery, and have worked in close synergy with structural scientists. As a Group Leader, your motivation and forward-thinking approach will be key. You will be tasked with developing, optimising, and validating biophysical assays to deliver project decision-making data swiftly and potentially at scale. Your expertise will guide programs to their choice of technologies, you will be involved in the design of assay cascades and collaborate with program teams to tackle the critical challenges in hit identification, lead optimisation, and candidate selection. This role is primarily lab-based but combines the potential for management responsibilities within and beyond biophysical sciences, providing a platform for continuous learning and growth. You will help form and deliver our department's scientific strategy, working with other members of our global leadership team. You'll be expected to stay abreast of the latest scientific developments in biophysics, evaluate new technologies, and spot opportunities for innovation to shape the future of drug discovery. In our team-oriented environment, you'll have the chance to apply your talents and make a significant impact on a wide variety of therapeutic projects through close collaboration with others. In this role you will:

  • Execute biophysical assay development, validation, screening, interpret results, and plan and recommend next steps in a timely manner to solve scientific issues.
  • Oversee portfolio of biophysical activities within Stevenage SBS department, including resource allocation, project strategy and integration within a global team.
  • Build and maintain a network of cross line interactions to ensure alignment within projects and within technologies that bridge departments as well as maintaining up-to-date knowledge of advancements in the field of biophysics and incorporate this knowledge into current and future research initiatives.
  • Author high-quality technical reports and publications with scientifically supported conclusions and recommendations.
  • Lead and mentor biophysical scientists fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

  • Extensive experience in biophysics, both in academic and industrial settings. This may include proficiency in techniques such as SPR, thermal shift, NMR, and mass spectrometry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical application of biophysical techniques in medicine discovery programs. In particular for Fragment-Based Drug Discovery (FBDD), hit qualification, and mode-of-action characterisation.
  • A proven track record of innovation, specifically in the integration of new biophysical methods into drug discovery processes.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to summarize and contextualize scientific data for project impact. This also includes excellent organizational skills.
  • Team player, capable of navigating complex situations, whether they are scientific, logistic, or organizational, and driving success.
  • Previous experience in a position of accountability that has influenced others, such as management, project leadership, safety, etc.
  • Preferred Qualifications & Skills: Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:
  • Line and project leadership experience.
  • Data skills, including scripting and programming.
  • Experience working across multiple drug modalities e.g. small molecule, antibody, vaccines, oligonucleotides.
  • Experience working with challenging targets such as membrane protein.
  • Understanding of associated disciplines such as structural biology and biochemical assay development.
