Full Job Description

This position is one of two civil servant Boat Maintainers working within a team of six military Marine Engineers at Hamworthy Barracks, Poole. This role is critical to sustaining Hamworthy Barracks Very High Readiness posture enabling its amphibious capability for both training and operations overseas. The successful applicant will take their place as a Boat Maintainer within the boat store at Hamworthy Barracks, responsible for the maintenance and servicing of the Unit’s tactical watercraft. (The successful candidate will be expected to travel for short periods in support of exercises and training courses’and may be required to transport themselves and relevant equipment in the course of these duties accordingly, therefore requiring a Full UK Cat B licence).

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

This is a full-time post. However, requests for flexible, part-time working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department.
Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities. Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions., The Boat Maintainers play a vital role in maintaining the tactical watercraft at Hamworthy Barracks and associated equipment required for both operational and training tasks when operating in an amphibious environment.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
+ Consistently make the most out of all resources at your disposal (including your own time) looking for opportunities to create efficiencies and make improvements for defence, pursuing them energetically.
+ Constantly ensure that all actions concerning the equipment within the Boat Store (this includes receipt/issue and maintenance) is carried out in accordance with Chain of Command (CoC) direction and guidance and current regulations. Make sure that all records pertaining to the tactical watercraft and equipment are kept up to date, and ready for inspection as required by CoC.
+ Continuously improve a working knowledge of all current regulations required for working in the Boat Store to make sure that all actions are carried out to the required standard and within current guidelines.
+ Anticipate and order any components and equipment required to keep the Boat Store fully operationally, supporting staff in dealing with any emergency as required.
+ Consistently carry out regular musters as produced by the military accounting system, ensuring that all irregularities are highlighted and corrected in accordance with CoC direction and guidance.
+ Ensure deployed equipment is accompanied by all documentation required by legislation and is completed by users in accordance with direction and guidance.
+ Complete and remain in-date for all mandatory training, as defined by the MoD and the Unit.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is:
+ Capable of working both independently and as part of a small team, in a military and civilian working environment, overseen by military supervisors, and will be expected to proactively contribute to the work of the whole team.
+ Ideally a skilled, hands-on person with evidenced experience in practical work fields, who relishes a challenge, they should be technically minded and willing to travel for short periods in support of exercises and training courses.
+ Prepared to undertake relevant training as required, in order to maintain required skill levels and remain current/competent.
+ Can be a fast-paced environment so the ability to work at pace under pressure is essential. The Job Holder will need to be highly motivated and efficient, approachable and customer focused.
+ Has basic level of written English, Maths and IT literacy – particularly Microsoft Office applications - will also be required in this role and should be evidenced in your application.
Essential Criteria:
+ A ‘Team Player’, who can integrate into a blended civilian and military workforce.
+ Willing to undertake all required training. Note: Inflatable Boat Maintainer Course (Pass) is essential; this can be taken in post.
+ Must hold a full UK (Cat B) driving licence, as may be required to transport themselves and relevant equipment in the course of their duties.
Desirable Criteria:
+ Working knowledge of the small boats workshop environment.
+ Understanding of equipment manuals.
+ Relevant experience in maritime engineering support.
+ Forklift Operator.
+ Additional Lifting Equipment Examiner (ADLEE).
+ Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
