Full Job Description

Working as part of a diverse global team of editors and writers, the Breaking News Editor will serve as a vital bridge in CNN's 24/7 live news operation, picking up each day from teams in Hong Kong, before supporting teams in the US. You will be charged with the news agenda during your hours: If something breaks during that time, you will help determine how to respond.,

  • Editing real-time breaking news posts and monitoring multiple breaking events for CNN's live updates platform.
  • Curating news updates around the day's biggest stories by leveraging CNN's massive reach and presence around the world.
  • Producing some original reporting (writing quick posts from live news events), assign reporting and work with writers on story pitches.
  • Creating high visibility pieces of content that provide valuable and necessary information for our audiences around the world.
  • Working across the network to make sure every update you put out has been vetted and is publishable.
  • This role will require you to work on Saturday and Sunday each week.

    Demonstrable editing experience on leading digital publications.
  • Must be an ambitious self-starter with a proven track record of editing major breaking news; superior news judgment; and the ability to deliver in a highly pressurized, deadline-driven environment.
  • A passion for, and genuine interest in, breaking news, and a curiosity and passion for how it travels across the internet, from social to alerts. This is not a features, investigative or beat role so you will need to not only juggle stories on a wide variety of topics - from international politics and US elections to awards shows and weather events - but will thrive in such an environment.
  • Able to edit quickly, follow our style and standards of news reporting and craft compelling headlines.
  • Must be a collaborator with first-class communication skills, as we are a truly cross-functional team that works with nearly every desk across multiple bureaus and time zones.
  • A willingness to work nights and weekends - flexibility with your schedule to account for major breaking news events is vital to this role.
  • A desire to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Hybrid Working - This role is advertised as a Hybrid work model, that combines remote and in-office work, following our current company policy and to be agreed with your Line Manager. Subject to any applicable laws, WBD / your Line Manager reserves the right to change this working agreement where this is essential to business needs and upon reasonable notice to you.

The successful candidate will share our insatiable appetite for breaking news and chasing fast-moving stories, while helping to shape our coverage and identify priorities of the day in real time across multiple time zones.
