Full Job Description
The role of the Breast Care Nurse is to provide a high-quality service within the hospital setting. The service provides expert specialist advice, information and support to patients and their families who are undergoing investigations for diagnosis of breast disease including malignancies. The main element of the role is providing emotional support to ladies recalled to the breast screening unit for further assessment, education, health promotion and research. The role will incorporate supporting patients from diagnosis, through treatment options and following discharge home.
The post holder will:
· Work in the Breast Screening Unit, Assessment Clinic. To provide ladies recalled to clinic following screening mammogram with psychological support.
· The CNS must meet women at the start of the assessment process to help manage their anxiety and distress by providing appropriate information and psychological support. Records must reflect the involvement of the CNS and that all recalled women have met the CNS at the start of the assessment process.
· The CNS must speak with women who undergo needle biopsy at assessment. This is demonstrated by documented evidence of the discussion, being available and contact details for the CNS being given to women awaiting biopsy results.
· To provide highly specialised service by undertaking holistic needs assessments of patients diagnosed with breast cancer. To plan, carry out and evaluate an individualised care plan for patients. To continually reassess patients' needs and alter care accordingly.
· Communicate effectively with patients, families, friends / Carers and health care professionals, providing relevant support, information, advice, counselling and education as required.
· Demonstrate critical and analytical skills.
· Act as patient advocate.
· Participate in reviewing patients in the drop-in clinic with adequate supervision.
· Ensure clinically effective specialist advice is given and offer ongoing appropriate support.
