Full Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Compliance Officer, we are recruiting a Building Fire and Safety Officer to assist in ensuring the authority remains compliant in all its statutory aspects., As the Building Fire & Safety Officer, you will be taking responsibility for co-ordinating and managing all matters relating to structural and fire safety in in-scope buildings to meet legislative requirements, which will include, but not be exclusive to:

  • Responsible for maintaining and updating relevant aspects of bespoke software, including updating of any amendments relating to changes in legislation to maintain the 'golden thread'.


  • To carry out monthly/quarterly building safety inspections on allocated Tamworth Borough Council Low, Medium and High-Rise residential buildings to include some supported living sites.


  • To oversee the implementation of controls in respect of structural and fire safety on a day-to-day basis and effectively manage safety within the designated building portfolio to which the role relates.


  • To ensure that controls are implemented in respect of building work carried out in the managed stock to which the role relates.


  • To engage with Assets and Housing Management colleagues who are responsible for managing and maintaining the sites.


  • To manage resident engagement within high-rise and/or higher risk building stock, particularly in ensuring that safety concerns are recorded, monitored, and dealt with appropriately.


  • To ensure that planned, preventive maintenance is carried out within the managed portfolio to which the role relates.


  • To engage with relevant internal Housing Management staff to ensure that roles are performed effectively in accordance with the Corporate Fire Safety Policy


  • To oversee the successful implementation of corrective actions arising from fire risk assessments and audits. To ensure that facilities for use by the fire and rescue service are effectively managed and maintained.


  • To perform any other reasonable tasks that ensure the effective management of premises for which the role is responsible, to the fulfilment of our customer service objectives.


  • This will be through on-site visits, liaising with contractors and desktop analysis.

    You will be working closely with housing management teams, residents, and premises managers to ensure all aspects of the golden thread are met.

    This is a hybrid working contract, there is a requirement for some duties to be carried out at home and some on site.     We are looking for a conscientious, confident, and self-motivated individual, with a sound knowledge of The Building Safety Act 2022, The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) 2005 (FSO) and The Fire Safety Act 2022 and any other compliance related regulations and legislation.

    In addition to this, the successful candidate will have a practical understanding of the NHF schedule of rates, construction design and management regulations, building regulations, and possess an excellent customer focused ethos.

    You will display a commitment to providing a customer focused service and making a difference in service delivery. Good communication skills and the ability to work both as a team member and independently are key attributes for this role.

    The successful candidate will:
  • Ideally have previous experience in a building related environment and/or safety role.


  • Ideally be qualified to a suitable level in a building qualification or a health & safety background or have in role experience.


  • Have in depth knowledge of fire and building safety.


  • Have a working knowledge of fire-fighting equipment and associated services.


  • Have knowledge of mechanical & electrical services.


  • Have working knowledge of fire doors and compartmentation principles.


  • Possess sound IT skills in office software suites and bespoke IT solutions for reporting and certification.


  • Possess a full driving license and have access to a vehicle., Public facing roles are covered by the Fluency Duty as outlined in section 78 of the Immigration Act 2016, to serve the public it is vital that those working in public facing roles can communicate in English with members of the public receiving local authority services.
