Full Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall financial management of the
school but the role will also oversee commercial, operational and strategic interests. This
will include HR, facilities, grounds and catering as well as providing long-term strategic
planning to ensure the continued financial health, success and longevity of the school.

As a critical member of the team the Bursar will report directly to the Headmistress. The
Bursar is also responsible to the Chair of Governors in their role as Clerk to the Governors.

As part of the Upton Office Team, the successful candidate would also be required to help
out with addition school tasks such as covering phones and reception as and when needed
as well as school/staff events which could occur in evenings and at weekends.

  • ACCA or CIMA Accountancy qualification essential


  • Previous experience of working in a finance role, preferably as Bursar or Business

  • Manager

  • People management experience


  • Payroll experience


  • Relationship building skills at all levels


  • Ability to demonstrate commercial acumen and expert management of the day-to-day

  • operations and non-academic functions of the school

  • Strong digital skills, specifically with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook are essential for

  • this role

  • Outstanding numeracy/literacy skills and attention to detail


  • The ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner





  • Preferable, but not essential - knowledge of and experience of the education/

  • independent schools sector

  • Excellent communication skills


  • Able to work as part of a team and use your own initiative

  • Salary: Competitive dependant on experience


  • Full-time position, i.e. 52 weeks/year including school holidays, working from 8:00am-
