Full Job Description

  • Level & Responsibility: This role is at a Manager level, but we'd also be open to candidates at a Senior Manager level.

  • Salary: Manager: £39,000+ per annum, depending on experience. Senior Manager: £48,000 per annum, depending on experience - both with a 10% discretionary bonus on top

  • Location & Hybrid Working: We are happy for the role to be based out of any of our office hubs (Manchester, Leeds or London) with a weekly presence in those locations. With the nature of this role, there will be travel to all of our office locations across the UK for internal and external stakeholders., We are looking for a Business Development Manager to join our central New Business team at SMG. In this role, you will build new partnerships for SMG, predominantly focused on generating CPG leads for our two agencies (Capture & Plan-Apps), with support across our retailer new business as and when required. You will work across the business development cycle; working to unlock new in-market relationships as well as pitching and closing new opportunities and will be a critical voice with regards to defining and sharpening the positioning and services offered by our agencies., We pride ourselves on creating challenging and exciting opportunities, meaning that no two days are the same. However, here's an idea of what your responsibilities will look like:

  • Work to achieve budgeted growth ambitions; meeting or exceeding defined margin targets per agency.

  • Play an active role in setting financial targets in budgeting moments as requested.

  • Provide accurate and insightful reporting of progress towards defined financial targets; define and discuss notable trends and actions to fast track the conversion of opportunities.

  • Work autonomously across the business development cycle; unlock new in-market relationships as well as pitch and close new opportunities including the development of commercial proposals. This includes the management & delivery of strategic media planning responses or insight-led consultancy projects for prospects; within each you would be required to collaborate with & coordinate a team of specialists to deliver a best in class output.

  • Use a blend of engagement tactics to drive traction with key contacts including colder outreach, entertainment, events (attendance and co-ordination), awards, content development and distribution etc. Keep a pulse on 'what works' and proactively shape business development tactics accordingly.

  • Ensure confident articulation of our propositions centred around an understanding of the current media market and retail & commerce media fundamentals, coupled with an ability to embrace technology and effectively deliver product demonstrations of Plan-Apps to prospective clients.

  • Continuously gathering feedback to identify opportunity and challenge areas which feed into the BD teams recommendations on proposition development. Work in collaboration with each agency and department lead (Managing Director through to Client Director) to knowledge share insight on in-market barriers to purchase, creating plans to address these.

  • Help to determine a clear list of target prospects based on market trends and size of opportunity, ensuring a hyper personalised approach to outreach.

  • Ensure all sales resources are best in class to support conversion efforts.

  • Take a consultative approach to in-market conversations; unlock a detailed understanding of the needs of potential partners and map back key services by agency.

  • Work as part of a small, specialist and determined team to knowledge share and maximise opportunities for SMG, taking on senior authority across the above areas as required to allow us to be a high performing team.

  • Champion Business Development across the group, work to drive excitement for the department across wider colleagues.

  • Work closely with SMG's marketing team, creating and distributing key content, attending events etc ensuring our agencies are well presented on relevant channels.

  • Own any up front consultation work with potential partners to sharpen our understanding of needs; this can include interviewing key stakeholders etc.
