Full Job Description

CPI is looking for a proactive Business Development Manager to support the delivery of ambitious pharma growth targets, with an emphasis on novel biopharmaceuticals and formulation development, for example lipid nanoparticle encapsulation. The role is offered on a hybrid basis, combining home working with regular travel to CPI's biologics manufacturing centre in Darlington and CPI's formulation centre in Sedgefield, where you will work closely with the technical teams, as well as support functions including marketing.

Reporting to the Business Development Director, you will utilize your scientific knowledge and identify a variety of potential projects to work on. You will engage with a wide variety of clients from UK-based SMEs to multinationals, and represent CPI at trade events where you will generate leads and establish contact with decision-makers, linking their requirements to CPI's capabilities, working with technical teams to develop proposals.

The role requires travel to events and clients throughout the UK and beyond. It is essential that candidates applying for this vacancy hold a full UK driving licence, and have the means to travel to CPI offices, as well as the ability to work away from home for short periods.

The role is offered on a hybrid basis, combining home working with regular travel to CPI's sites in North East England. Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to travel to the office frequently, and occasionally at short notice.

Key tasks in the role will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Executing plans to grow income in focus areas in alignment with CPI strategy and key target metrics.

  • Developing networks (including public funding mechanisms) to enable efficient and proactive identification and prioritisation of project opportunities.

  • Generate new business opportunities by prospecting, such as at trade events and by contacting relevant companies.

  • Preparing compelling project proposals, briefs and quotes; where appropriate coordinating internal and external supporting resources; and closing the sale with the client.

  • Utilising CPI's CRM system to maintain an accurate up to date Sales Funnel.

  • Developing sustainable collaborative partnerships to enable the effective delivery of CPI's business development and technical strategies for the pharma market.

  • Supporting the translation of the technical capability offering to clients.

  • Contributing to relevant business development data and reports to support various internal management activities (to include portfolio management, business performance) and external stakeholder reporting and monitoring (for example grant funding bodies).

It is essential you are qualified to a minimum of Degree level in a Life Science or a Physical Science, preferably in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or Bio/ Chemical Engineering disciplines. A Masters or higher in one the listed disciplines is desirable. You should also have:

  • Significant Business Development or complex technical sales experience, within the biological or pharma formulation development sector. (We may also consider applications from experienced Chemists, Biologists, Bio/ Chemical Engineers and other Life Scientists who hold experience in a customer-facing role and are looking to take the next step in their career. In such cases, the salary level will be commensurate with relevant experience.)

  • Excellent client management and communication skills, to enable effective collaboration with technical and commercial leads within CPI and network partners, and the ability to generate strong value propositions with project partners.

  • Demonstrable experience of strategic selling techniques and working with CRM systems.

  • Hold working knowledge and broad experience of IT packages, particularly Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Please note that this role involves providing cover at various locations, often on short notice. Therefore, candidates must have a valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle to respond efficiently to different sites, as these are not easily accessible by public transport.
