C3B Conservator: Organics

The British Museum has an exciting opportunity for a Conservator: Organics (C3B grade) to join the Department of Collection Care. The main purpose of this role is to contribute to the care of the collection through a combination of interventive and preventive measures in support of the Museum's operating plan, and to proactively engage with the public programme activities of the Conservation Section. The role requires the post holder to have good general knowledge and experience in the care and conservation of a wide range of organic materials, and an interest in conservation of World Cultures collections. Knowledge in the conservation of textiles and/or plant fibers and feathers would be desirable. Key areas of responsibility:

• To contribute to the conservation of collections made of a range of organic materials, including textiles.
• To contribute to the preparation of objects for loan, exhibition, and permanent display.
• To contribute to the care of the collection through dedicated projects on collections in store.
• To work collaboratively with colleagues within the department and across the museum.
• To contribute to the department's outreach activities through public speaking, writing for social media, publishing, etc.
• To contribute to the development of new preventive or interventive measures.
  
  Recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level or equivalent, with emphasis on the conservation of the material relevant to the specialism of the role.
• Demonstrable practical skills in the conservation of a range of objects made of organic materials.
• Understanding of mechanisms involved in material deterioration.
• Knowledge of contemporary principles and practice in preventive conservation.
• Understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision making.
• Able to undertake highly detailed tasks while working under pressure.
• Experience of planning own work to deliver set objectives on time and to budget.
• Open and effective communicator with good spoken and written English
