The Cancer Community Champion Lead will ensure that Cancer Champions attend project team meetings and peer network meetings to maintain effective communication, share best practice, identify any training needs and to raise any concerns.

The Cancer Community Champion Lead will work in partnership with all identified stakeholders to raise the profile of the Cancer Community Programme and attend required stakeholder events/campaigns., 1. To work closely with the Fishermen's Mission Port Staff, fishermen, Cancer Community Programme Manager, Community Engagement Officer, and Cancer Champions to develop a full understanding of the fishing community.
2. Woerk in collaboration with stakeholder organisations: fishing associations, Macmillan Cancer Support, Primary & Secondary Care, Public Health, North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Voluntary Community & Social Enterprises (VCSE) and individuals as deemed appropriate.
3. Building strong and proactive relationships with the fishing community, active and retired, including widows and families, ensuring that they are visible to the fishing community.
4. To reach out to trusted community members to identify and recruit Cancer Champions. Providing Cancer Champions with a training package, thus raising the volunteer's ability to engage with the fishing community, increase cancer awareness and normalising cancer conversations, whilst also signposting to relevant healthcare professionals.

5. To provide Cancer Champions with on-going development training, one to one support, and supervision. Completing TFM risk assessment prior volunteering commenced: that identified risks have an effective risk management plan in place.

6. Working with the Cancer Community Engagement Officer, Cancer Champions, and partner services/agencies to organise and deliver community activities, events, and campaigns.
7. Encouraging the fishing community, active and retired, including widows and families to attend cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment appointments. Supporting with the removal of barriers, if possible.

8. Assisting the Community Engagement Officer in the delivery of cancer awareness training sessions, alongside Cancer Champions, within the community. Ensuring that Cancer Champions can engage and signpost clients to mainstream cancer services, thus increasing access to early screening and treatment.

9. As part of the team, provide fishermen and communities with cancer specific advice and information, thus removing stigma, promoting a positive mindset, and normalising cancer conversations. Signposting individuals and communities to early cancer screening provision and/or community cancer support services.

10. As part of the team, when/where required, to work on an outreach basis, across community venues, to develop and implement community focus groups, to gather understanding/feedback of the different attitudes and barriers towards cancer awareness and healthcare provision. Working with the Cancer Community Programme Manager in addressing barriers to enable fishermen and their families to receive access to health and community services.
11. To provide regular stakeholder feedback, from events, to the Community Engagement Officer and the Cancer Community Programme Manager.
12. To monitor volunteering performance, providing the Cancer Community Programme Manager with quantitative and qualitative data.
13. Supporting the development of the Cancer Community Programme via presentations at stakeholder events/forums, networking, and promotion.
14. To undertake appropriate training to support ongoing professional development.
15. Work flexibly as may be required by the needs of the service, which will include some national travel to attend Fishermen's Mission annual events/conferences.

  • Experience of working with volunteers (E)

  • Experience of recruiting, training, managing and supervising volunteers (E)

  • Experience of working on community projects, preferably, but not essentially, in a charity (D)

  • Willingness to work in accordance with the policies and procedures of The Fishermen's Mission, agreed guidelines and codes of conduct (E).

  • The Fishermen's Mission is a Christian organisation, the Community Champion Lead should be comfortable in working in this environment. (E)
