Full Job Description

  • The careers leader will take lead responsibility and accountability for the delivery of our school's

  • programme of careers education, advice and guidance.
  • The post holder will have the confidence and authority to lead colleagues, make decisions, and

  • enact reform to ensure that the school meets the Gatsby Benchmarks., Leadership:

  • To secure high quality Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) provision

  • from Years 7-11 inclusive, to use resources effectively and to continuously improve standards for
    all students.
  • Lead the team of teachers, external partners and others who deliver careers guidance.

  • Advise the senior leadership team on policy, strategy and resources for careers guidance and

  • showing how they meet the Gatsby Benchmarks.
  • Report to senior leaders and governors.

  • Review and evaluate careers guidance and provide information for school improvement

  • planning, Ofsted and other purposes.
  • Produce and be responsible for implementing an annual strategic and development plan for

  • education, information, advice and guidance, including financial and resource management. This
    will include providing regular reports as required to SLT and/or governors.
  • Understand the implication of a changing education landscape for careers guidance, e.g.

  • technical education reform.
  • Ensure compliance with the legal requirements to provide independent careers guidance and

  • give access to providers of technical education or apprenticeships to students in schools.

  • Ensure that details of the school's careers programme and the provider access policy statement

  • are published on the school's website.
  • Act as a consultant/reference point for Heads of Year and tutors dealing with careers queries.


  • Management:

  • Review, develop and implement strategies for sustaining high standards of delivery of CEIAG to

  • match the full range of student ability and aspirations, ensuring the needs of vulnerable groups
    are catered for (including Pupil Premium, SEN & Scholars).
  • Plan the programme of activity in careers guidance.

  • Coordinate a full programme of careers events involving local and national employers.

  • Brief and support staff involved in careers guidance.

  • Monitor delivery of careers education across the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks.

  • Support tutors, providing initial information and advice.

  • Manage the work of others e.g. staff involved in the delivery of careers education and guidance.

  • Keep abreast of developments and best practice in careers through research, attendance at

  • training events and conferences, and establishing relationships with peers at other schools.
  • Support and guide students, and where appropriate colleagues, parents and carers with timely,

  • accurate and constructive feedback on students' progress and areas for development.

    Coordination:

  • Manage the provision of career and labour market information.

  • Manage the careers section of the school's website, ensuring information is accurate and up to

  • date.
  • Liaise with the PSHE leader and other subject leaders to plan their contribution to careers

  • guidance.
  • Coordinate necessary encounters with employers, workplaces and further/higher education.

  • Communicate with pupils and their parents.

  • To facilitate the Year 11 application process for sixth forms, colleges and apprenticeships.

  • Actively promote careers in school assemblies and at information evenings and open days.

  • To ensure students have access to advice on choices at 13+ and 16+ and to work with

  • appropriate staff to support students making career and higher education decisions at these
    levels.

    Networking:

  • Establish and develop links with further education colleges, apprenticeship providers, university

  • technical colleges and universities.,
  • Establish and develop links with local Careers Guidance organisations and industry partners.

  • Manage links with external organisations.

  • Secure funding for careers related projects.

  • Build a network of alumni who can help with the Careers education and guidance programme.

  • Foster good relations with alumnae and employers to solicit their support at careers events and

  • through networking opportunities.

    Personal Responsibilities:

  • Actively promoting school policies and procedures.

  • Responsibility for own continued professional development.

  • Attending and participating in meetings scheduled in the school calendar punctually.

  • Adhering to the School's Safeguarding Policy.

  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required


  • General

    1. Work carried out must accord with current legislation and/or regulations.

    2. All employees have a responsibility for their own safety and must not endanger that of
    colleagues/visitors in the workplace.

    3. You may also be required to undertake other duties commensurate with your grade in
    relation to a post of this nature.

  • Received (or be willing to receive) Careers Leader training provided by the CDI (Careers

  • Development Institute) or equivalent body.
  • Experience of working with young people preferably in a school or college setting.

  • Thorough knowledge of education, employment, training and personal development

  • opportunities that are available for young people.
  • Knowledge of the local labour market and issues relating to learning and employment.

  • Detailed knowledge of relevant developments in Careers Education, Information, Advice and

  • Guidance.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of legislation and statutory requirements of working with young people.

  • An understanding of and a commitment to, equality of opportunity for all.
