Full Job Description

The Casualty Peril Lead is a newly created role focused on driving our risk management strategy in Casualty lines. You'll report to the Head of Exposure Management and will be supported by a Casualty Emerging Risks Lead. The role has access to, and support from, an Operations & Development team, and Exposure Management analysts. Casualty lines now represent approximately 50% of the Group's net premium base and annual profits with plans for each of these to grow. Along with this growth in premium comes an increase in exposures. Our Casualty RDSs are now in many cases larger than our natural catastrophe RDSs and we have an ambition to develop an (at least) equivalent Risk Management & Analytics capability in this area. This is an area in which we have invested time, people, and process, but which still provides an opportunity to be fully shaped & developed by you.Success will result in:

  • Clarity into the bets (profits vs risk) we are taking
  • A transparent, managed approach to emerging risk identification with timely course corrective actions
  • Measurement and communication of our largest risks linked to an effective reinsurance strategy
  • This will be achieved by:
  • Outlining and delivering the Casualty Exposure Management plan
  • Developing a rich understanding of our coverages and sources of risk
  • Working with our CUOs, Casualty Divisional Directors, and Heads of Exposure Management in the business units to identify risk, adapt our coverages and mitigate the impact of emerging Casualty Risks.
  • Developing and managing the Casualty Exposure Management loss scenarios
  • Bringing together the key analytics and metrics that describe our Casualty portfolio along with the Exposure Management and horizon scanning activities for these lines
  • You will be responsible for:
  • Defining measures and the operational processes and structure needed to monitor and make timely smart decisions on our casualty book
  • Challenging our CUOs, Casualty Divisional Directors, and Heads of Exposure Management in the business units to adapt their portfolios and respond to emerging Casualty risks.
  • Work across the business to establish Early warning indicators that help identify trends that we need to respond to.
  • Working with CUOs to identify, understand, and mitigate, casualty risks.

Experience in Casualty insurance (in-depth knowledge in at least one of the following - underwriting, broking, claims, legal, exposure management, actuarial) or,
  • Experience developing and managing a complex risk management or analytics process within Insurance
  • Good communicator/influencer - will need commitment to get things done, on time, across various teams.
  • Attention to detail - tenacity to focus on the detail when it's required
  • Strong academic background in an appropriate field

As an international specialist insurer we are far removed from the world of mass market insurance products. Instead we are selective and focus on our key areas of expertise and strength - all of which is underpinned by a culture that encourages us to challenge convention and always look for a better way of doing things.
  • We insure the unique and the interesting. And we search for the same when it comes to talented people. Hiscox is full of smart, reliable human beings that look out for customers and each other. We believe in doing the right thing, making good and rebuilding when things go wrong. Everyone is encouraged to think creatively, challenge the status quo and look for solutions. Scratch beneath the surface and you will find a business that is solid, but slightly contrary. We like to do things differently and constantly seek to evolve. We might have been around for a long time (our roots go back to 1901), but we are young in many ways, ambitious and going places. Some people might say insurance is dull, but life at Hiscox is anything but. If that sounds good to you, get in touch. Diversity and Hybrid working At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we're committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success. We have also learned over the past few years that working life doesn't always have to be in the office, and now it is safe to do so we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance. This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance. We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
