Full Job Description

CCTV Investigators are responsible for identifying crimes potentially captured on CCTV recording equipment operated by local authorities and private companies or individuals. CCTV Investigators provide support to PIP2 serious and complex investigations and provide that same support to Crime command, Divisions and other Forces. Ensuring that such evidence is secured and preserved in a timely manner to facilitate the investigatory process and assist in bringing offenders to justice.

  • To be involved in the recovery of vital evidence linked to the Investigative Strand priorities. Priority enquiries to concentrate on investigating and detecting serious violent crime (SVC) serious acquisitive crime (SAC) and serious sexual offences (SSO). Having identified potential sources of CCTV evidence, make contact with the system operators to ensure evidence is secured and preserved. The post holder must also be willing to work at any location within the Strand as operationally necessary whilst working in principle from one of the three sites.
  • Review or arrange to review CCTV evidence either at the operator's premises or if seized by police for later viewing at the police station. To assist the post holder, external hard drive access is required.
  • Ensure CCTV footage that potentially contains relevant material is seized in an appropriate format and that the continuity and the integrity of the evidence is maintained.
  • Ensure the timely dissemination of information to investigating officers to support the criminal investigation process.
  • Update our crime recording system with the findings from the CCTV and provide statements where necessary.
  • Develop best practice in relation to the use of CCTV in criminal investigations. 'Become Expert in Role' and provide advice and support to Divisions around CCTV investigations. To attend any crime scene to support the initial investigation subject to risk assessments.
  • Implement and maintain a system to measure performance in relation to CCTV tasking to help identifying best practice and share future learning.
  • Have an understanding of, and maintain support for equipment based at the police stations that are required to view and copy and seized CCTV.
  • The post holder will need to be resilient in the face of frustrations and be able to work in a demanding and fast paced environment. They will achieve this by management of their own health and stress, and through professional discussion with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Working under pressure in operational settings and viewing potentially distressing material involving vulnerable victims of crime, the post holder will need to remain sensitive and compassionate
  • Post Holder where required will ensure that to comply with Data Protection footage is recorded/downloaded onto DEMS (Body Worn Video system)
  • Give guidance and support to colleagues that are tasked with CCTV enquiries.

  • Well developed IT skills preferably gained within a Microsoft environment including the ability to operate and interrogate operational computer systems.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Well-developed organisational and time management skills along with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • The ability to promote effective working relationships at all levels with internal colleagues and external partners as well as the ability to work closely with police officers and staff and directing them as necessary.
  • Experience in working with basic office administration procedures and the willingness and capability to undertake suitable training learning to use existing or new computer systems.
