Full Job Description

  • To ensure that First Steps is recognised nationally as the leading eating disorder charity

  • lead and inspire First Steps ED (FSED) staff, workers, volunteers and partners to deliver our vision for transforming lives and direct delivery services, and our objective as a volunteer led coproduction organisation with lived experience to be available to support our clients'

  • represent FSED externally to a diverse range of people across sectors including in the NHS, voluntary sector, research and private sector, and funders

  • ensure FSED continues to develop into a high performing and sustainable charitable organisation and has a governance structure that remains fit for purpose

  • further the work of FSED staff, volunteers and partners ensuring that citizens, their families and stakeholders regard FSED as the provider of choice and advancing latest evidence-base for service development.

  • To drive new business development building relationships with partners and commissioners and exploring contract and income opportunities.


  • Accountabilities and Responsibilities

    Strategy
  • Enhance and develop FSED longer term strategy to determine how and when we can expand our programmes to all across our communities whilst maintaining a strong team

  • Collaborate with partners to recognise areas of growing service need in a changing healthcare and Social Sector environment

  • Execute on FSED's objectives and strategy whilst having regard for responsibilities to key stakeholders

  • Regularly review the financial and operational performance and strategic direction of FSED

  • Recommend to the board of trustees an annual budget and strategic financial plan and ensure the achievement of this following approval of the board of trustees

  • Ensure financial management and corporate governance systems are in place and are sufficiently robust to enable FSED to meet its objectives and report on performance, in accordance with legal, contractual and regulatory requirements

  • Ensure efficient and effective use of resources

  • Regularly review the FSED organisational structure and recommend changes as appropriate

  • Examine all services and capital expenditure and recommend to the board of trustees the proposed direction for those which are significant

  • Maintain intelligence of the changing local and national communities, healthcare and education markets to enhance and develop existing services that FSED offer's and leverage opportunities to introduce new and improved interventions; and

  • Regularly review the Communications, Education and Information and Intelligence strategies to ensure alignment to the overall FSED strategy


  • Service Delivery and Key Relationship Management
  • Develop good relationships with Trustee Board and present clear information and reports to enable them to make informed decisions and gain appropriate assurance when necessary

  • Lead the First Steps ED team recognising the individual strengths and weaknesses and managing in a way that sets the right culture and which maximises the potential of the team.

  • Identify and adapt initiatives for volunteering across the NHS, Education and Local Government sectors; leading to the delivery of measurable improvements in volunteer, citizen, patient and employee experience

  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders at the highest level

  • Build effective relationships with wider community partners, other volunteer organisations to proactively seek and build continuous and meaningful engagement

  • Stakeholder engagement and consultation in the development and implementation of new initiatives culminating in service blueprints that can be used to scale and spread across the Midlands

  • Utilising our volunteer network to expand provision

  • Work closely with key strategic partners to develop integrated service initiatives measured on impact and outcomes

  • Present at events representing FSED. Act as the key representative for FSED with the media and press

  • Undertake analysis of complex information (qualitative, quantitative and statistical information) to inform and measure the effectiveness of projects and work streams

  • Deliver a digital strategy and suite of digital solutions that improve efficiency and user experience, and increase the data and evidence of impact

  • To champion and orchestrate FSED's strategy and business plan within the healthcare and education sectors, the voluntary sector and with key funders secure the growth plan

  • To develop/enhance interventions that can be scaled up across the Midlands and further the reputation of FSED as an innovator sharing good practice for adoption by others


  • Leadership
  • Provide vision, direction and leadership in enabling FSED to achieve its strategic goals and objectives

  • Manage and develop the team in the fulfilment of their duties and responsibilities, ensuring appraisals are undertaken at least annually, and individual development and training opportunities are provided and relevant

  • Lead on living the FSED values and winning behaviours to secure a positive and engaged team that demonstrate the same culture to partners and stakeholders; and

  • Ensure the development of people management (including volunteers) to develop high levels of staff engagement, participation and loyalty to FSED stakeholders


  • Compliance
  • Ensuring that all statutory and contracting requirements are met

  • Have the appropriate policies and procedures in place to meet regulatory requirements, e.g. HR, GDPR, Safeguarding; and

  • Ensure effective governance working with the Chair and board of trustees

    The successful candidate will have all or most of the following skills and abilities:

  • Excellent and versatile communication skills. Able to communicate and collaborate at all levels both internally and externally to build relationships with key stakeholders

  • Effective influencing and negotiating skills. Able to influence in situations where the post holder has no direct authority

  • Highly developed and adaptable presentation skills. Confident public speaker

  • Delegation and motivation

  • Able to design, develop and execute strategy. Strong analytical skills capable of modelling resources aligned to capacity and demand, and can demonstrate evidenced based outcomes

  • Ability to lead in a complex environment, recognising when there is a need to be flexible and agile

  • Able to identify key influencers, collaborate and create strategies involving those individuals to shape and deliver change at neighbourhood, place and system levels

  • The determination to achieve excellence and to challenge poor performance; and

  • Self-awareness, knowing one's own strengths and limitations, Minimum of 10 years' experience of senior leadership in a complex health care or voluntary sector environment

  • In depth knowledge of the healthcare, local government and voluntary sector

  • Evidence of continuous professional development

  • Experience in public relations

  • Evidence of building effective and sustainable teams that work collaboratively to deliver organisational mission, strategy and plans

    First Steps ED is an evidence-based eating disorder charity based in the Midlands working further afield. We support people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds with all types of eating disorders. Our extended workforce of staff, freelancers, placement students and volunteers support over 150 individuals and families each month affected by eating disorders through our award-winning individual and group therapy services through NHS and other funded pathways available as self, parent/carer and professional referrals.
