Full Job Description

Through our vital research, the National Physical Laboratory is helping support scientific and commercial innovations, international trade, environmental protection and health and wellbeing. As technology advances, we're able to use this to take even larger strides in delivering demonstrable scientific impact. As our Chief Information Officer, you'll lead in this pioneering collaboration role working with other UK and international science, engineering, and technology organisations to maximise the benefit of the digital transformation. This is a critical management role delivering the value of the organisations digital systems with a focus on areas such as Data, Customer, ERP, Cloud, AI and linking to Cyber. As such, you'll own the digital modernisation strategy and drive the technical direction - future proofing the architecture for digital alignment. You'll also drive employee contribution and engagement through a people centric culture which builds on the organisation's values. This strategic leadership role will be developing and executing the digital strategy that drives long-term success: enabling research, science, engineering, and operations. Whether you're selecting and implementing suitable technology to make us more efficient; owning the portfolio of IT activities to optimise performance; or analysing costs, values and risks of information technology to shape decisions - you'll be spearheading the function and collaborating across the organisation as a key enabler. Heading up a team, you'll also motivate and inspire them to deliver your vision, whilst developing and fulfilling their potential too. As a member of the senior leadership team, you'll build strategic customer and stakeholder relationships, act as a brand ambassador for NPL and work across the organisation to drive change and promote NPL's values.

You are an exceptional Digital leader with a background in transforming a business's performance by embracing new and emerging technologies. Highly technical, you're also very commercial and a confident communicator. A natural leader, you have superb people management skills and are able to take complex subjects and convey them in an audience appropriate way. Beyond that, we're looking for someone who'll thrive in an environment like ours - ideally we are looking for candidates who have proven and relevant experience of working within science and technology organisations.
