Full Job Description

As a Clinical Brachytherapy Specialist , you will play a pivotal role in our multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality brachytherapy treatment to our patients. You will be responsible for:

  • To strategically lead the Brachytherapy service by stream-lining and taking responsibility for the patient journey from referral into Brachytherapy to follow-up, anticipating problems and implementing solutions.

  • Be recognised as a clinical expert in Brachytherapy treatment, developing clinical practice, giving expert advice and disseminating knowledge to the radiotherapy team, Oncology Centre Trust and Nationally.

  • To lead a team of radiotherapists within the Brachytherapy unit ensuring all treatments are performed according to trust and department policy within the quality environment.

  • To ensure that the working practices are consistent with the centres strategic plan and meet professional and locally agreed standards. Provide a multi-disciplinary approach to service development and provision.


  • At the Kent Oncology Centre we offer:
  • Radiotherapy services are provided at Maidstone Hospital and Kent & Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. Brachytherapy is provided at Maidstone Hospital.

  • Advanced Technology: Work with a range of Brachytherapy services- Insertion of Fiducials and Spaceoar, Gynaecological HDR, Prostate LDR &HDR. We are currently developing Interstitial Gynae.


  • Main duties of the job

    o To develop specialised patient/disease management packages for own area and/or across the care pathway within professional boundaries.

    oTo manage the bookings and scheduling of appointments for Brachytherapy patients. This will involve liaising with theatres and recovery wards.

    o Ensure that all staff working the team operates within the correct policies and procedures regarding patient care.

    o Liaise with radiotherapy physics, engineers and representatives of companies providing equipment to the department on day to day issues such as servicing and breakdowns to minimize disruptions and maximise efficiencies

    o Develop working practices to facilitate an efficient safe working environment

    o To provide clinical cover on the Brachytherapy unit in a leadership and training capacity and to participate in out of hours telephone on call.

    o To manage and investigate the Brachytherapy incidents and risks offering advice to staff and ensuring that outcomes are identified, acted upon and learning is shared.

    o Communicate issues of service delivery to the head of radiotherapy services and participate in the problem-solving exercises.

    o To attend defined Brachytherapy meetings and feedback to Head of radiotherapy services.
  • To act as the radiation supervisor for Brachytherapy
