Full Job Description
- Accountable for the direct delivery of Christie Medical Physics and Engineering services including Radiotherapy Physics, Nuclear Medicine, Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection and Clinical Engineering.
- Accountable for the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering budget of ~ £25.2m for services delivered to The Christie and regional customers.
- Responsible officer for regional contracts of up to £700,000 per annum.
- Take responsibility for scientific standard of Medical Physics services including:- 1. Radiotherapy services at The Christie and its satellites 2. Nuclear medicine services at The Christie, regional Nuclear Medicine and the National PET contract. 3. Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection services to contracted trusts and The Christie NHS Trust, 4. Clinical Engineering services at The Christi
- Ensure services provided at The Christie NHS Trust and regional customers conform legal standards in the provision of radiation safety advice ( as set out in IRR and IRMER) and reflect standards expected of the CQC and HSE.
- To maintain a network of healthcare professionals to fulfil state registered roles as clinical scientists, Medical Physics Experts, Radiation Protection Advisers and Radioactive Waste Advisors 2. Leadership
- To provide operational and scientific leadership to the CMPE Directorate.
- To provide health care science leadership within The Christie NHS Trust acting as lead scientist for the medical physics branch of healthcare science.
- The represent the Christie as part of the Operating Network of radiotherapy centres
- Provide Healthcare science leadership with the Northwest Network of Healthcare Science.
- Participate nationally through leadership roles in relevant bodies such as The Instiutute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine or Royal, College of Radiologists and The British Institute of Radiology
- Provide leadership in research representing the directorate on the Research Strategy Committee and working closely with the University of Manchester on the radiation related research portfolio.
- Professional leadership for healthcare scientists working in Medical physics 3. Management
- To set and gain acceptance of challenging but realistic objectives, plans and budgets by key staff; helping them to meet their objectives through guidance, support and co-ordination.
- To hold, and ensure the sound management of, the Medical Physics Directorate Budget and to hold and manage clinical service budgets of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (including maintenance contracts, radiopharmaceuticals and other sealed radioactive sources for radiotherapy).
- To ensure the efficient and cost-effective provision of Medical Physics services of the highest possible quality where and when they are needed within North Western Region (and beyond where this is appropriate).
- Determine strategic objectives (with a 5-10 year horizon) for the long term planning of Medical Physics and other services which depend on Physics and Clinical Engineering
- To ensure through the negotiation of Service Level Agreements with NHS Trusts and other service users, that satisfactory outcomes for the Directorate and the users are secured.
- Contribute to overall management of Trust, serving on policy making and management committees, including, Christie Research Strategy Group, as required by the Chief Executive.
- To provide the management structure for the department of Medical Illustration. 4. Professional role
- To provide Medical Physics Expert level scientific advice within the fields of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering to and on behalf of the Trust.
- To maintain awareness of professional issues within the UK and International Medical Physics community and to represent the Directorate and Trust on professional issues within this community.
- Develop and maintain contacts with policy makers at all levels within the NHS and DoH.
- Maintain competency in one area of medical physics at Medical Physics Expert level. 5. Scientific - Clinical Service delivery
- To ensure that the requirements for physics and engineering are identified and that the services provided are optimised within the resources available.
- To work with the operational group leaders in taking responsibility for the standards of service delivery including the safe, effective and efficient use of resources.
- To ensure that the Directorate is proactive in the identification and implementation of new applications of physics and engineering within medicine.
- To identify opportunities for effective exploitation of the Directorate's skills, facilities and expertise within the Region and beyond in order to realise the healthcare benefits of physics and engineering.
- Lead policy implementation, service developments and the production of business cases at Network level and above.
- Oversee the identification and analysis of operational and financial risks to the directorate.
- Assess risks and benefits for major service developments. 6. Scientific - Research and Development
- To provide leadership for the Directorate's research portfolio.
- Direct and initiate a portfolio of translational research aimed at improving health care by research and development in the application of Physics and Engineering
- Publish research in internationally recognised peer reviewed research journals and to communicate research through national and international conferences.
- Specifically, to work with the clinical departments and academic groups operating within the Trust to maintain a coherent R&D strategy.
- To ensure that the outcomes of research and development, carried out throughout the Directorate, are promulgated by means of internal reports, publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
- To establish and maintain collaborations with scientific, and clinical departments in healthcare organisations nationally and internationally, including Universities and commercial companies.
- To support the acquisition of funding and resources for both service and research and development from a wide variety of sources, including appropriate sources outside the Health Service.
- To ensure that the opportunities afforded by the development of the National Institute of Health Research are realised
- To act as a supervisor of doctoral level students. 7. Education
- Oversee a programme of education including collaboration on Masters and doctoral programmes with multiple higher education institutions.
- Provide leadership for the Directorates teaching activities
- Provide leadership, jointly with the University of Manchester, to the national Doctorate level programme for Higher Specialist Scientific Training for consultant clinical scientists.
- Provide an environment for training and Continuous Professional Development of Staff. 8. Human resources, Teaching and training
- To have responsibility for the 4 operational sections and support section (admin/workshop etc) within CMPE in respect of all HR issues, including; disciplinary, grievance, competence, fitness to work etc., in order to comply with all Trust policies and generally accepted good practice.
- To ensure that members of staff are educated, motivated and trained to meet existing needs and new challenges facing the Directorate.
- To ensure that any other formal or informal teaching or training by members of the group is undertaken as required.
- To work closely with the Manchester University and other Universities in the region to develop and provide educational courses.
