Full Job Description

This is a replacement post for a Clinical Fellow in CMR (whole-time) based at Royal Brompton site of the Trust. The post holder will be responsible for delivery of high-quality clinical care for patients being seen through the CMR Unit., + To assist in the running of the clinical CMR service under the direction of the Director, including being fully trained in CMR safety and the delivery of a safe NHS service, and being present at CMR scans.
+ Preparing preliminary reports on patient scans for consultant approval
+ To maintain a high standard of patient care at all times.
+ To liaise with the Chief Technologist in CMR with regard to clinical service issues.
+ To liaise with the physics and clinical staff to ensure the safe operation of all imaging equipment in the CMR Unit.
+ To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised when necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens.
+ To observe safety regulations with regard to the Local Rules for CMR and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
+ To clear up after spills in accordance with the Trust's infection control policy.
+ The post holder will attend the clinical departmental meetings.
+ Other duties in the CMR unit will be under the guidance of the Director.
Year 2 Wimpole Street
The post holder will be working in a multidisciplinary diagnostics and imaging environment. This will encompass cardiac and general imaging using the following modalities:
+ PET-CT; MRI; CT; Ultrasound (including echocardiography); X-Ray
The post holder will wok alongside the imaging and diagnostic team undertaking clinical work in equal parts for all aspects of imaging., The Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Unit has pioneered contributions in the field over 30 years. The CMR Unit is an international referral centre, performing ~10,000 clinical cardiovascular CMR studies per year, as well as publishing 40-60 research papers annually. There are 5 CMR scanners which are: Two Siemens Sola1.5T scanners, a Siemens Avanto-Fit 1.5T scanner, a Siemens Vida 3T scanner, and a state-of-the-art Siemens Cima scanner for research. The CMR Unit is directed by Prof Dudley Pennell, and there are 14 additional consultants, 7 clinical fellows in training, and national and international trainees. We have a team of 12 technologists to run the clinical service. Research and support staff includes physicists, engineers, nurses, and administrative staff. The post's main duties at Royal Brompton will be to be trained in CMR and contribute to the clinical CMR service.
RB&HH Specialist Care is the Trust's international and private patient business. RB&HH opened a dedicated private outpatient and diagnostic facility at Wimpole Street. The facility houses 8 consulting rooms and extensive diagnostic facilities with the aim of delivering a complete single-day outpatient case assessment in complex as well as routine conditions., 5.1 To assist in the running of the clinical CMR service under the direction of the Director, including being fully trained in CMR safety and the delivery of a safe NHS service, and being present at CMR scans.
5.2 Preparing preliminary reports on patient scans for consultant approval
5.3 To maintain a high standard of patient care at all times.
5.4 To liaise with the Chief Technologist in CMR with regard to clinical service issues.
5.5 To liaise with the physics and clinical staff to ensure the safe operation of all imaging equipment in the CMR Unit.
5.6 To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised when necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens.
5.7 To observe safety regulations with regard to the Local Rules for CMR and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
5.8 If necessary, to remove property from a patient, for example to take any metal object or jewellery off for a CMR scan and ensure the patient's property is looked after and returned to them at the completion of the procedure.
5.9 To clear up after spills in accordance with the Trust's infection control policy.
5.10 The post holder will attend the clinical departmental meetings.
5.11 Other duties in the CMR unit will be under the guidance of the Director.
6. People Management
6.1 To communicate appropriately with other members of staff, giving support and advice where necessary.
6.2 To train technologists and visiting doctors in the use of MR scanning equipment, and CMR scanning techniques.
6.3 To welcome and assist visitors to the CMR unit.
7. Communication
7.1 The post holder will maintain good working relationships with multidisciplinary team within the CMR Unit and the hospital.
7.2 To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
7.3 To communicate appropriately with other members of staff, giving support and advice where necessary.
7.4 To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination and to assess specific communication needs of individual patients.
7.5 To use tact and sensitivity when asking personal questions, eg checking pregnancy status before an examination.
7.6 To explain procedures and reassure patients who may have concerns regarding claustrophobia in order to gain their cooperation.
8. Resource Management
8.1 To use complex and expensive MR scanning equipment safely and responsibly.
8.2 To report any equipment failure to the Chief Technologist
8.3 To abide by the Trust's core behaviours for staff and all other Trust Policies including standing financial instructions, research governance, codes and practices and health and safety policies
9. Information Management
9.1 To maintain confidentiality of image data.
9.2 To report faults in the data information systems in use in the department.
9.3 To record all scan episodes with CMR Unit office staff
9.4 Information & Technology support will be available.
10. Training and Development
10.1 The post-holder will be fully trained in their duties.
10.2 Further training in computer and research techniques will be provided as required.
10.3 To participate in the continuing development programme for all staff.
10.4 Training by the post-holder of other members of staff will be required as necessary.
10.5 The post holder will achieve and maintain an appropriate level of competency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
10.6 There are no research duties in the job plan for this position
10.7 The post-holder may be required to assist with clinical research studies.
10.8 Any clinical research carried out will be under the guidance of the Director, and in accordance with the CMR Unit Guidelines for Clinical Research.
Year 2 at 77 Wimpole Street
+ To lead advanced life support resuscitation in response to cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, etc.
+ Vetting requests, supervising scanning lists, providing urgent/verbal preliminary reports after discussion with a consultant and teaching junior imaging trainees.
+ To perform pharmacological stress tests for cardiac imaging, especially for PET-CT and cardiovascular MR.
+ To medically support in preparing patients for the most appropriate cardiac state for CTCA imaging.
+ To be present and available for all scans involving the use of contrast media.
+ Participating in clinical and imaging meetings.
+ Abide by local rules of radiation protection under the direction of the RPS/RPA.
+ Participate in audit and be committed to improving patient care within this facility.
+ To contribute to the development and standards of imaging techniques.
+ Ensuring that all patient records are complete and ready within the agreed timeframes.
+ Participate where necessary in-patient history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing.
+ Maintain good communication with Head of Imaging, General Manager and Clinical Directors where necessary.
+ The post holder will be expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and to contribute to the smooth running of the private facility.
Training and Education:
+ Participate in the Trust's appraisal system to identify personal objectives, reflect on progress and set a personal development plan in order to develop within the post.
+ To keep updated with IT training, RIS/PACS, Datix and other relevant systems.
+ The successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to promote knowledge of radiology amongst colleagues.
+ Participate in training for staff.
+ Maintain a high level of specialist knowledge in imaging extending his/her professional and management skills.
+ Image assessment of MRI, CT, PET-CT
+ To present at intern/national conferences regarding any interesting cases/research.

+ To ensure Trust-wide compliance with new legal statutes as they arise where diagnostic imaging is involved, including Standard Operating Procedures and Local Procedures required by IRMER 2000.
+ To be aware of the broader 'Clinical Governance' agenda.

+ Post holder will ensure safe importation and exportation of confidential image data.
+ Post holder will ensure the accurate recording of all clinical information recorded in the information management and picture archiving and communication systems used.
Other duties
+ To identify and discuss any business development opportunities with the Head of Imaging.
+ Support with preliminary imaging reports for discussion with imaging consultants
