Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a junior clinical fellow to join our Intensive Care team. The RUH ICU admits approximately 1000 patients per year with 85% as emergencies, including critically unwell children. Our patient cohort is a 60% medical - 40% surgical split with a mean age of 61, average length of stay 2.7 days and a standardised mortality ratio of 0.93 (meaning that more of our patients survive compared to similar sized units). In December 2024 we move to a brand-new ward, B36, a 16 bed capacity across a number of negative, neutral and positive pressure ventilated rooms. The new ward will offer excellent facilities for both patients, their relatives and staff, with increased numbers of spaces to work and rest compared to our current unit.

Our unit is staffed by 2 consultants and 3 resident doctors (2 SHO, 1 SpR) as a minimum, 7 days a week. We offer multiple training opportunities throughout the week including radiology meetings, ICU follow up clinic, FUSIC club, ICM teaching aimed at our resident doctors and management / leadership opportunities for our more senior trainees. Our monthly journal club, M&M and clinical governance sessions are also good learning opportunities for doctors in training. We have a strong track record in research and quality improvement with several professors working in the department. We have a proven track record in helping our clinical fellows gain posts on competitive training programmes such as ACCS and anaesthesia., SHO role on the B36 Intensive Care Unit - routinely assisting on ward rounds, seeing appropriate ICU referrals, undertaking procedures and required administrative tasks.

At the RUH we put people at the heart of what we do, working together as one team to make a difference for our patients, each other, and our community. No matter what your role is, we value everyone's contribution in supporting the exceptional, person-centred care we pride ourselves on.

We are proud to be in the top 20 best hospitals to work for in the country.

We are committed to creating a compassionate and inclusive environment. This can be seen in our growing community of staff networks - celebrating successes and creating opportunities to listen and learn. We value our differences, champion kindness and civility, and truly believe that diversity makes us stronger.

A culture of learning, developing and innovating is the thread that runs throughout our whole organisation. We want to support you to thrive, taking your career to its full potential.

We value staff wellbeing, with a well-established programme of support. We believe in a holistic approach spanning all aspects of living a healthy life, including physical, emotional, spiritual and financial wellbeing. We've even got a pool!
