Full Job Description

The Ophthalmology Directorate wishes to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery. The appointment is for12 months beginning August 2025. The post holder will work at Liverpool University Hospital and the majority of the sessions will be based within the Aintree University Hospital, Elective Care Centre. Duties include out-patient clinics and theatre sessions with the two oculoplastic consultants (see timetable). The Clinical Fellow will also assist with the care of any oculoplastic in-patient, and have the opportunity to work in collaboration with the regional Maxillofacial Unit and the Walton Centre for Neurosciences in the management of joint complex cases.

The post holder would ideally have completed general ophthalmic training and obtained FRCOphth or equivalent. Prior experience of oculoplastics is highly desirable. The post is expected to attract candidates who have completed their general ophthalmic training and at present is not recognised for training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

St. Paul's Eye Unit

St. Paul's Eye Unit is a Division, now part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, formed from merger of The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen UNiversity Hospitals NHS Trust Trust and the Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in October 2019. St. Paul's is located on three sites: the Royal, Aintree and the South Liverpool Treatment Centre at Garston. The new Royal Liverpool University Hospital with a purpose built ophthalmic unit opened in October 2022 at the same site as the previous hospital.

The contribution of St. Paul's Eye Unit to the local community for over 140 years was recognised in 2015 by the award by the City of Liverpool of the Freedom of the City.

The Unit provides modern facilities for the treatment of general and sub-specialist adult and some paediatric ophthalmic disease.

The purpose-built outpatient department has full departmental support including nursing, refracting and dispensing optical services, contact lens service, orthoptics, digital photography, electrodiagnosis, corneal topography, wavefront aberrometry, specular microscopy and confocal corneal microscopy, B scan ultrasound, OCT (anterior and posterior segment), digital photography and HRA. An Excimer laser service was set up in July 1994 and now offers a comprehensive range of services including femto LASIK for NHS and private patients. There is also a service for clear lens extraction with insertion of multifocal lenses for private patients.

£49,909 to £70,425 a year per Annum (dependant on experience)
