Full Job Description
The Fellow duties will be 50% clinical and 50% research activities. During their clinical role, the Fellow share the assessment and management of inpatient care of all Plastic Surgery patients in Bradford Royal Infirmary. In practice and in the interests of their training all Junior staff are expected to have a working involvement in the management of all Inpatients. The Fellow attends all Consultant and Specialist Registrar ward rounds and manage emergencies when on call. The fellow will be on the CT doctors on call rota. The Trust Fellow is encouraged to attend major operating lists each week. Opportunities are provided to operate under Consultant/Specialist Registrar supervision or independently, depending on experience. During their research role, they will be assigned a research project on wound healing at the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit (PSBRU) at the University of Bradford. They will be registered for a MPhil / MD degree at the University, which they will be expected to complete over the one-year period.
The Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, became operative on 1 April 1991, provides acute services for the City of Bradford and the surrounding areas. There are two large general hospitals, Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke's Hospital. Maternity and Neo-natal services are centralised at Bradford Royal Infirmary. All main specialities are undertaken in Bradford except Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery and Renal Transplantation which are provided on a regional basis by other Trusts. Most of the Trust's work is for PCT. Significant contracts have also been agreed with Leeds, Dewsbury, Calderdale, Huddersfield. Research Unit profile The Plastic Surgery & Burns Research Unit (PSBRU) was established by Prof David Sharpe in the wake of the devastating Bradford City FC fire and is now lead by Professor Ajay L Mahajan. The PSBRU has always had close working relationship with the skin researchers at Bradford University and is now an autonomous unit with the University's Centre for Skin Science (CSS) lead by Professor Margaret Thornton. The CSS is the largest academic base in the UK offering what is a unique blend of fundamental and applied skin and hair follicle science.
