Further information is available in the job description., Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is a designated paediatric Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the Northwest Region. Children and young people who sustain traumatic injuries require a managed transition from admission to rehabilitation and subsequently discharge to the community. There is overwhelming evidence that rehabilitation teams with the expert knowledge and skills, who work collaboratively and include formal liaison or goal setting meetings, that have an active education programme, and that engage families in the process improves patient outcomes and is often very cost effective. For this reason the major trauma rehabilitation service aims to align its objectives to the World Health Organisation's principles which states that rehabilitation intervention should be aimed at achieving the following:
+ Preventing the loss of function
+ Slowing the rate of loss of function
+ Improving or restoring function
+ Compensating for lost function
+ Maintaining current function
The role requires both the generic and the speciality knowledge, skills, attitudes, and assessment skills needed to manage patients presenting with traumatic injuries. It involves particular emphasis on clinical reasoning, managing complex multi-factorial problems, recognising appropriately both the limits of and the need for medical investigations and treatments, and identifying when other medical specialities and/or health and social care professions and/or organisations need to be involved, and how to liaise most effectively with other teams.
Whilst providing clinical leadership and overseeing the delivery of the major trauma rehabilitation pathway, it is hoped the post holder would strive to decrease variation in practices, increase quality of care and standardise pathways across Liverpool, Cheshire, and Merseyside as well as the wider area that the service serves, bringing together tertiary care, primary care, education, social care and charitable and third sector organisations.
The post holder must have excellent leadership skills and be able to influence at a National, Northwest, and local level. They will be responsible for maintaining and strengthening clinical and operational links with neighbouring trauma centres to ensure the robustness of the Northwest Trauma Rehabilitation service. They must be dedicated in providing excellence in patient care at all points of the trauma rehabilitation pathway.
The post holder must support service improvement and be a champion for change. There also may be opportunities to create an in-house trauma rehabilitation training programme for trainees at Alder Hey.
