Clinical Nurse Specialist

The post holder will be expected to provide specialist care and advice to deliver a quality Acute Pain Service (APS), developing the service to deliver excellent clinical care to provide a positive patient experience.
The post holder will work collaboratively with members of the team to improve the quality of service.
It is expected the post holder will have forward thinking leadership and management skills to lead the service.

· The post holder will take overall responsibility to develop the acute pain team in partnership with other members of the speciality (Lead Clinician, Directorate Manager, Matron etc), working collaboratively to develop services and the quality of care delivered. It is expected that the post holder will work collaboratively with the lead for the Pain Clinic to develop services delivered and improve patient experience.
· The post holder will be innovative and have responsibility for developing and changing practice and /or services in a complex and unpredictable environment.
· The post holder will carry responsibility for the APS, and this will include setting high standards of care, the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of protocols of care.
· To be flexible in approach to the clinical area and to act as the professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching, and research.
· To work autonomously where required utilising specialist knowledge within the field and to provide expert advice to other healthcare professionals and patients/carers.
· Have the competency to undertake Nurse/Practitioner led clinics and perform procedures that are required for the service.
· Be responsible for providing advice, support, education and guidance to Trust staff, patients, and relatives in the management of acute and/or chronic pain.
· Participate in the strategic planning and operational delivery of the inpatient pain service across the Trust.
· To provide professional and clinical leadership and highly specialist expertise in pain management and to act as a resource to patients, carers, and staff.
· To facilitate measurable and sustainable improvements in pain management throughout the Trust through audit, projects, quality assurance and teaching initiatives.
· To provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the clinical setting and Trust wide.
· Maintain and promote effective communication both verbal and non-verbal with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and other wards or departments, including formal and informal presentation of information relating to the service.
· To demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity in dealing with patients, clients, visitors, relatives, and colleagues maintaining good customer relations.
· Uphold the Trusts values and vision statement.
· Promote the corporate image of NGH Trust to all individuals, groups, and organisations both within the Trust and to the community at large.
· To work collaboratively with other members of the interdisciplinary team, particularly the pain management consultants, critical care outreach team, palliative care, recovery staff and surgical teams to ensure the needs of patients and their carers are appropriately addressed.
At Northampton General Hospital we provide general acute services and hyper-acute stroke, vascular and renal services to people living in Northamptonshire. As well as this we are an accredited cancer centre and provide cancer services to a wider population of Northamptonshire and parts of Buckinghamshire.
