Full Job Description

The Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team here in the NNUH are very active and currently provide specialist nurse led skin cancer clinics in which we offer a comprehensive service to patients during the 5 years follow up period required from initial diagnosis. Working directly under the supervision of the named consultants this is a valuable and cost-effective method for providing care (Kings Fund report 2014) and freeing up consultant slots for new patients to be seen. Skin Cancer Nurse Specialists provide specialist guidance and support at all stages of care and treatment for all skin cancer patients., The number of referrals to the dermatology department has doubled in the last few years for all types of skin cancer. Melanoma skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the UK with approximately 16,700 new cases diagnosed each year. About 2,500 people die from melanoma annually. 1 in 36 males and 1 in 47 females will be diagnosed with a melanoma in their lifetime and in the 15-44-year age group, melanoma is the 2nd most common cancer in males and the 3rd in females. The NNUH is the third busiest skin cancer service in the country. Nationally there has been a growth in nurse-led clinics to assist in meeting a variety of healthcare needs in the United Kingdom.
