Full Job Description

This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week to provide care of patients with Head and Neck tumours from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire., The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide input to the following areas of delivery:

  • Outpatient clinics - support the timely assessment, review and treatment of patients referred from Greater Manchester and Cheshire
  • Radiotherapy and SACT Services
  • Inpatient Services
  • Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings
  • Team meetings
  • Educational meetings
  • Audit
  • The role will be responsible for:
  • Management of patients with head and neck cancer receiving standard therapy including treatment decisions and ongoing care.
  • Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines, and clinical audit
  • Contributing to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.
  • Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.
  • Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Radiologists
  • Actively contributing to the training of junior doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both in-patient and outpatient departments.
  • This role does require participation in the on-call rota that involves a commitment to a full week (1: 20 rotation). The on-call consultant provides input to the acute admissions unit at the weekend. The trust is currently reviewing the on-call commitment and this may be subject to change in the future.

    All Disease Group consultants work as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting the delivery of this work including one Nurse Clinician, one Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP), four Clinical Nurse Specialists, Research Nurses, Clinical Fellows, Specialist Trainees, Pharmacists and Advanced Health Professionals in Dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy. The appointee will be expected to deliver both radiotherapy (photons and protons) and systemic therapy in Head and Neck tumours, including a significant interest in developing proton beam therapy and MR Linac. The post holder will be one of 5 Clinical Oncology and 1 Medical Oncology consultants specialising in Head and Neck cancer and will be an active member of the MDT. They will receive photon referrals from the single Greater Manchester Head and Neck MDT, and proton referrals from the national proton beam therapy service. The post holder will join the clinical, technical, and project teams in developing and delivering the proton beam therapy service at The Christie. They will help develop technical radiotherapy, imaging studies and the MR linear accelerator treatment. It is estimated that the post holder will see approximately 150 to 200 head and neck (photons and protons) new patients per year. There is collaborative working within the head and neck research team. The successful applicant will support and contribute to the delivery of clinical trials. The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

    The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to the Clinical Oncology consultant group. They will join a current team of 8 Clinical Oncology and 1 Medical Oncology consultants specialising in Head and Neck, Thyroid and Skin cancers and will be an active member of the MDTs. Systemic therapy is primarily delivered centrally. Radiotherapy (photons) is delivered at The Christie or at the satellite units in Salford, Oldham and Macclesfield and proton beam therapy will be delivered on site at The Christie Proton Centre.
