Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Scientist or Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory. Our laboratory carries out testing for renal and stem cell transplantation for NHS teaching Hospitals in Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester. We are also a supra regional centre involved in the provision of HLA selected platelets and immunogenetic diagnostic testing to many hospitals in the Midlands and North of England. We have recently moved to the new purpose built NHSBT centre near J37 of the M1 at Barnsley with a high standard of laboratory and other facilities.

You will join our friendly team and play an important role performing, analysing, and interpreting a wide range of specialist scientific and technical procedures and investigations relating to the issue of results for transplant patients and donors impacting directly on patient care. In addition, you will be involved with the supply of HLA selected platelet units, providing advice to clinicians, and contributing to the coordination and supervision of the work, training and conduct of scientific and support staff. We will consider applications from Clinical Scientists who are within 6 months of obtaining HCPC registration. We are open to a conversation about relocation expenses for the right candidate., In this role as a Clinical Scientist / Senior Biomedical Scientist, you will be required to analyse, interpret, validate and report the results of specialist Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) investigations. Your duties will include:

Analysing and performing both molecular and serological based testing in relation to solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplant and immunogenetic services.

Assisting with quality management issues within your section of the laboratory, under the direction of the Clinical Scientists Section Head and Laboratory Operations Manager

Communicating specialist results to internal and external clinicians, other healthcare colleagues and scientific staff on for example test results.

Contributing to the coordination and supervision of the work, training and conduct of scientific and support staff

Assisting with the supply of HLA selected platelet units, providing advice to clinicians

With appropriate training and experience you will be required to participate in a 24/7 on-call rota and exceptionally to provide cover in times of operational difficulty for which notice will be given.
